Book Description

November 8, 2000
("Sarah Kelling/Max Bittersohn" Series)

Sarah Kelling and her art detective friend, Max Bittersohn, arrive at her summer home to find a lovely old Bilbao looking glass. Sarah's never seen this precious antique before so, mindful of burglaries, Max calls the police. Appie Kelling arrives, bringing her own special brand of total chaos, her son, Lionel, and her four grandsons. They make Genghis Kahn's horde look like a bunch of sissies, but are they really thieves, arsonists, and killers? Somebody is, that's for sure. Max and Sarah have to battle their way through a wall of social prejudice, a maze of conflicting clues, and some extremely sticky situations before they find out who's taken them on this perilous trip through the looking glass.

"MacLeod shows once again why her Crime Club novels have put her in the front ranks among mystery fans here and abroad." (Cleveland Plain Dealer)

Sarah and Max go on vacation at Ireson Landing. They find a valuable Bilbao Looking Glass in the house. Sarah insists it does not belong to the Kellings. Then a neighbor is murdered and then her friend. Are they related or coincidence. Great ending for Sarah and Max.

4.0 out of 5 stars Who Needs Friends Like These?, May 18, 2008
Sarah Kelling and Max Bittershon leave Boston for a summer at Ireson Landing in the fourth Max and Sarah mystery, THE BILBAO LOOKING GLASS. But it is anything but a vacation as Sarah's Aunt Appie and her family arrive to keep Sarah from making a mistake and to partake of the traditional Kelling custom of free-loading.

No sooner than Sarah opens the door than she and Max discover a rare antique mirror that has been stashed in her home. The yacht club crowd pulls out all the stops to give Sarah a welcome she doesn't want and to prevent her from marrying Max by framing him for murder and robbery.

It doesn't work as Max's family are respected year round residents--this story digs into the prejudices of very shallow people.

The usual fast pace you expect from Charlotte MacLeod and packed with her clever characters who spice the pages.

Nothing is ever as expected from this seasoned writer. Just the older book to take to the dentist office, where you'll enjoy the time to read.
