This two-volume work is a comprehensive collection of the pictorial sources for sport in Pharaonic Egypt. Adopting a broad definition of sport, its scope embraces relevant cultic scenes as well as archery, charioteering and horsemanship, hunting, wrestling, open-air games and board games, acrobatics, dancing and water sports. Over 2,000 documents are given detailed descriptions, with systematic annotations relating to the place, date and content of the documents, as well as the most important secondary literature. The hieroglyphic captions are given in transcription and translation. A representative selection of the pictorial documents, accounting for approximately half of the total material, is presented in the illustrated volume. Accompanying maps classify the material by subject area with indications of their topographical distribution and chronological proximity. The publication of this corpus of materials makes available for the first time the complete pictorial tradition of a great, ancient sporting culture, the intention being to stimulate and intensify research in these fields by the provision of the basic materials. FR Das zweibandige Corpus enthalt die Bildquellen zum Sport im pharaonischen Agypten in vollstandiger Form. Durch Ansetzung eines weiten Sportbegriffes umschliesst es entsprechende Kultszenen sowie Bogenschiessen auf die Zielscheibe, Wagenfahren und Pferdetraining, Jagd, Kampfsport, Spiele, Brettspiele, Akrobatik, Tanz und Wasseraktivitaten. Uber 2000 Dokumente sind unter systematischer Angabe von Ort, Datierung, Material sowie der wichtigsten Literatur einzeln beschrieben. Die hieroglyphischen Beischriften erscheinen in Transkription und Ubersetzung. Eine reprasentative Auswahl der Bilddokumente, die sich auf etwa die Halfte des Bestandes belauft, wird im Tafelband bereitgestellt. Beigegebene Karten schlusseln das Material nach Sachgebieten hinsichtlich topographischer Verteilung und chronologischer Dichte auf. Mit diesem Corpus wird erstmals die bildliche Uberlieferung einer grosseren antiken Sportkultur komplett vorgelegt in der Absicht, die Forschung auf den genannten Gebieten durch Darbietung der verfugbaren Materialbasis anzuregen bzw. zu intensivieren. CURRIC. Wolfgang Decker, Diplom-Sportlehrer (1963) und Dr. phil. (1970) in Agyptologie und Klassischer Philologie, Universitat zu Koln, ist Professor fur Sportgeschichte an der Deutschen Sporthochschule Koln. Forschungen und Publikationen zum Sport als Teil der Kulturgeschichte Agyptens und der klassischen Antike. Mitherausgeber von Nikephoros-Zeitschrift fur Sport und Kultur im Altertum, sowie deren Beihefte. Michael Herb, M.A. (1986) in Agyptologie, Philosophie und Griechischer Philologie, Universitat zu Koln, ist nach dreijahriger Forderung durch die Deutsche Forschungs-Gemeinschaft seit 1991 Mitarbeiter an der Deutschen Sporthochschule Koln.
