Book Description

September 18, 2012

For years immigrants were told that the only way for their children to embrace American culture was to leave behind their heritage language and speak only English. But what if this advice was based solely on political motives and not the wellbeing of children? What if the truth was that all children in America, regardless of their cultural background, would actually benefit from learning two languages? The answer to this question has sparked a new Latino parenting revolution that is changing the face of America.

Roxana and Ana, founders of the wildly successful parenting blog SpanglishBaby, are part of a growing movement of Latino parents who are proudly reclaiming their language and cultural heritage for themselves and their children. Laugh and cry with them as they stumble through the ups and downs of raising bilingual, bicultural children in America and discover themselves in the process. This inspiring parenting memoir includes practical tips and resources to help parents from all backgrounds give their children the benefits of bilingualism. Bilingual Is Better debunks old stereotypes while shedding new light on hot topics like bilingual education, cultural heritage, and what it really means to be Latino. A perfect blend of hilarious anecdotes and solid research, this book is a fun, engaging read which is sure to spark conversation and positive change.

Roxana A. Soto and Ana L. Flores co-founded the popular parenting blog SpanglishBaby, which was recently named a Must Read Mom’s Blog by Parenting magazine. Both authors are well known, award-winning bilingual journalists.

About the Author

Ana L. Flores: Ana Lilian Flores is truly a child of two worlds. Born in Houston to parents from El Salvador; she grew up in El Salvador until she headed back to the U.S. to attend college. She soon started a vibrant career as a television and entertainment producer and content creator, with a specialty in the U.S. Hispanic industry, both in the U.S. and in Mexico.

After becoming a mom, Ana co-founded SpanglishBaby.com™, the online community for parents raising bilingual and bicultural kids. SpanglishBaby’s success and her acute sense of market trends and content curation kick-started Ana’s professional reinvention as a blogger,
published writer and social media strategist working with brands eager to connect with influencers in the Latina blogosphere.

Roxana A. Soto: An Emmy-award winning bilingual and bicultural journalist with experience in print, online, and television, Roxana A. Soto was born in Lima, Peru, and moved to Miami as a teenager. After spending more than 13 years as a newspaper reporter and television producer, she decided to call it quits, left South Florida and became a mother.

A couple of years after the birth of her first child, Roxana wanted to go back to writing…on her own terms. So together with Ana Flores, her best friend from college, she co-founded SpanglishBaby.com™ in 2009 quickly becoming the go-to site for parents raising bilingual and bicultural kids. Roxana is currently the Editorial Director of SpanglishBaby.com™, which was recently chosen as a Must Read Mom’s Blog by Parenting magazine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, insightful book! October 5, 2012

This book is a must-read for anyone considering raising a child with two languages or in the process of doing so. It is touching, funny and wonderfully readable, but it is also packed with practical advice about the decisions and challenges of raising bilingual kids. The authors both have young children and have drawn from their own experiences as well as research to put together an informative, yet personal resource.

I raised my children with two languages and I would have given anything for a book like this. It was a wonderful experience, but it was also emotional and often exhausting. Bilingual is Better offers reassurance and support to help you stick with the decision to teach kids a second language. This book is supportive, not judgmental, and full of insight into a complicated process.

I thoroughly enjoyed this read. The book is well researched, provides plenty of resources (website, books, blogs, authors) as well as personal experiences and lots of encouragement. It examines American Ethnicity from a different perspective, and encourages parents to instill a love and respect for both cultures and languages. I am bilingual and bicultural and the information provided in this book has renewed in me an eagerness and determination to ensure that my kids are also bilingual and bicultural - the benefits truly outweigh the effort.

As the author of Bilingual Benny & The Lost Cat - Learn Spanish for Kids, English/Spanish Book, I know a thing or two about bilingual education and theory. I have been a big fan of SpanglishBaby for a few years, and decided to take the plunge and read this new book by the founders. I expected the book to explain not just why bilingualism is better; but also how to go about making this happen. But, as the authors point out, the book is not so much a how-to, but a new vantage point on the new bilingual and bi-cultural world we live in. As a non-native Spanish speaker (I forced myself to learn the language, and am married to a Latina), I could not share many of the sentiments in this book -- but still came out very pleased. The way Ana and Roxana portray the bright future (and obvious advantage) of maintaining bilingualism is inspiring. I also learned quite a bit about dual language programs, and the school system point of view. If you have made the choice to raise a bilingual child, this book should be mandatory reading.

So excited!
Oh, thank you! We certainly hope it is helpful and that more and more parents realize the benefits of a bilingual upbringing. It's not easy, but totally worth it.
