Bill Cosby *IS* a Very Funny Fellow -- RIGHT!,
By Brenda Tighe (Atlanta) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bill Cosby Is A Very Funny Fellow Right! (Audio CD)
I used to have ALL of Bill Cosby's recordings on LP when I was a kid, including this one. My brothers and I listened to them over and over again, and we would laugh ourselves silly each time. Our mother could never understand how we could listen to the same routines over and over and over again and still find them funny, but we DID! We listened to them so many times, we had them all memorized, and we never got tired of them.I don't know what happened to my old albums - I think my Dad got rid of them - but I sure am glad to see this recording here! I listened to some of the snippets and laughed myself senseless all over again. Bill Cosby's humor never gets old.

This was Bill Cosby's very first album. It sold over a million copies, and the rest is history. Most of this material holds up well today, but the bits about athletes doing razor blade and hair tonic commercials are a bit dated. The absolute classic routines are the ones about Noah. This is a very funny album. Recommended to fans of classic comedy. Right!

Hilarity for any generation.,
This review is from: Bill Cosby Is A Very Funny Fellow Right! (Audio CD)
The thing I appreciate the most about Bill Cosby is that he appeals to so many types of people. He can be hilarious to a person of any age, which is very rare nowadays. Part of the reason is that he's always been a clean comic; no turning the air blue like so many others do. I am in my 20's and I think he is great! I bought this album about a year ago, but I'd heard many of the skits when I was six or so because my mother had them and I thought he was hilarious then! As you get older, you realize that there are some jokes that only someone older would get, but everything is done tastefully. This album features Bill's very famous Noah and the Lord routine, which I've loved since the first time I heard it. "Superman" is one of those jokes that has a tinge of adult humor to it and it is great! "Hoof and Mouth" is a short, clever little skit that makes it seem that cows aren't as dumb as they look. "Karate" is my personal favorite on this one. It just gets funnier and funnier as it goes on. Every routine is a classic as is this album, Bill's first. What an awesome way to start! If you like funny jokes that don't require offending the listener, than this is for you. HIGHLY recommended!

Bill Cosby's gifted comedically in ways the average sitcom actor dreams of, and has created a level of standup few compete with. He is a master artist, and no mere funnyman. "Bill Cosby Is A Very Funny Fellow... Right!" is one of his best efforts.
Having found "Himself" to be hilarious, I expected more of the same. It is isn't. Instead of stories about his childhood, or his family's adventures at home, he gives us a story about Noah and God talking over how the ark should be built, how his coach would inspire the team, the trouble Superman might run into while changing in the tollbooth, and two cows discussing the dilemma of having hoof and mouth disease. Then there's his story about riding the subways, finding a nut in every car, and the advantages of knowing karate. As always, Cosby makes the mundane incredibly funny. The drawback of the CD is there's no video. While Cosby isn't as physical of a comic as some, he still uses the stage, mike and chair as props. A DVD version of this must be great. I fully recommend "Bill Cosby Is A Very Funny Fellow... Right!" It is Bill Cosby at his best, but he's always at his best. Anthony Trendl editor, HungarianBookstore.com

Bill's Noah is a classic. Nut in Every Car is a wonderful bit about his experiences in a NY subway car. It's probably a better description than John Rocker's ignorant ravings about NY subways. It's a must for every Cosby fan.

The Essential Bill Cosby: The Birth of the Doctor of Comedy,
By
This review is from: Bill Cosby Is A Very Funny Fellow Right! (Audio CD)
BILL COSBY IS A VERY FUNNY FELLOW RIGHT? was Bill Cosby's debut album back in 1963. It immediately shot to the top of the charts and became a comedy classic. And Bill was just getting started. I can still remember listening to this album for the first time as a child. The father of one of my best friends loved Bill Cosby's stand-up work and we used to sit in front of the record player and listen to these old LP's for hours on end. I guess what is surprising about that is the fact that my friend and I started listening to them when we were [....] and that was in 1992. While most of my friends were watching MTV, my friend and I would fire up an old stereo receiver from the 1970s and work a phonograph.
Now, I don't just mention these details in order to reminisce on my childhood. Rather, I can remember being captivated by Bill Cosby's comedy and story-telling at a very young age. I would listen to these records for hours on end until I reached the point that I could recite them from memory. And now, at the ripe old age of twenty four, I still enjoy these albums. What amazes me about Bill's work is the fact that it is, almost without exception, timeless. Not only does Bill work with themes that never go out of style, his comedy is so rich that it grows with you. When I was nine, I found certain things funny and loved it. But as I got older, I began to understand the routines more and more from an adult perspective. Thus, each time I listen to it, there is something new to discover and laugh at. BILL COSBY IS A VERY FUNNY FELLOW RIGHT? captures Bill Cosby's work at the beginning of his career, before he had become a household name. Like many first efforts, Cosby has not quite reached his full form. Many of the routines are a bit dated and do not focus on the themes that would later define Cosby's work: family life, raising children, marriage, and childhood. Many of the routines reminded me of the work of Bob Newhart: one-sided conversations, often historically located, intended to make history collide with modern conventions. For instance, track two considers what would happen if there had been a football-style coin toss at the beginning of the Revolutionary War and before the battle between General Custer and Chief Sitting Bull. I could not help but be reminded of Bob Newhart's album, THE BUTTON DOWN MIND OF BOB NEWHART, while listening to this track. Nevertheless, BILL COSBY IS A VERY FUNNY FELLOW RIGHT? does feature some of Bill's classic routines. Perhaps his most famous routine, "Noah," is captured here in its entirety (the entire trilogy). Many consider this to be his best routine. Though I think he later would reach greater heights, "Noah" is a classic and remains a staple of "Best of" collections. As mentioned before, "Toss of the Coin," is also a hilarious bit. Finally, the last two tracks are also of particular merit: "The Pep Talk" and "Karate." If you are a fan of Bill Cosby, you need to get this album. If you are a fan of stand-up comedy, you need to get this album.

Even though this album was released in 1963, these comedy pieces more than stand the test of time. Bill Cosby's comic genius shines brightly throughout, especially in the three-part "Noah" sketch. Overall, it is well worth the money.

You can't understand stand up comedy until you have heard one of these early works of Bill Cosby. Take away the profanity and you may find little in today's comedians' material. This was when funny was just plain FUNNY! I recommend it highly, along with "I Started Out As A Child".
