Part of Engvall's magic is that he doesn't lapse into frantic mannerisms or mug for the camera. He talks to his audience like we're at our local pub, commiserating because we got old and the world has left us behind. His conversational tone, leavened with clean humor and sympathetic friendliness, hasn't shown up in comedy much since Carson died, and I've mourned its absence.
Where his Blue Collar fellow travellers have grown aggressive in their down-home portrayals, Engvall remains disarming because I don't feel like he's playing a character. He feels like that funny friend we all have, offering us another beer and telling us a story that cracks us up because it feels real. We see ourselves in him. I for one appreciate that simple, witty honesty.
Sorry Bill....needs work
It was off right from the start. Instead of telling us about his life, Bill talked about odd events he had read in the newspaper. I can read those for myself, thank you very much. Bill goes on to tell us how much he loves his wife, and what she has to put up with, but what comes across instead is how unhappy he is in his marriage. The stories about his wife are no longer funny, but on the edge of bitter. One cannot help but sympathize with Gail - all Bill wants to do is watch TV or sit on the beach drinking Mai-Tais.
When they went on vacation to Costa Rica (a country I love) Bill comes across as a party pooper. Bill's idea of fun is drinking. You can do that in the US. Gail wants to go zip-lining (tons of fun) and take advantage of all the other activities Costa Rica offers. In Bill's defense, I will say that the "shark feeding frenzy" sounded like a must miss to me too.
Bill in a "red bow" was Bill as himself again - hilarious. And the "Here's Your Sign "Bonus" feature was also classic, funny Bill. But all in all, he made old age sound like a real downer (I'm older than Bill and I can tell you he is WRONG - so cheer up) and made you wonder if he isn't headed for a divorce (which I truly hope is NOT the case). But it sure made me wonder what Gail thought of this DVD.
If I could do it over I would not have purchased this DVD. It's mediocre, at best.
