Biography

Paul Motian convened this trio for a special project at New York’s Village Vanguard in February 2009. From a week of concert recordings, Motian and producer Manfred Eicher subsequently selected the material presented on Lost In A Dream. The album puts an emphasis on balladry, using ballads as vehicles for profound soloing and group playing. In these touching performances of Paul’s songs,… Read more in Amazon's Paul Motian Store

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the finest discs by this partnership, September 26, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Bill Evans (Audio CD)
This disc celebrates songs written (or frequently played by) the iconic jazz pianist Bill Evans. Paul Motian has recorded several exceptional CDs with Bill Frisell and Joe Lovano over the years, and this is one of their finest. Bassist Marc Johnson, who played with Bill Evans in his final great trio, is a perfect addition to the group. The songs are mainly lyrical ballads and mid-tempo pieces. The exception is "Five", which gives Frisell a chance to indulge his more "out" electronic wizard side. Exceptional interplay between the musicians, clear recording, highly recommended

4.0 out of 5 stars Bringing Bill Back, July 6, 2010
This review is from: Bill Evans (Audio CD)
This is a wonderful recording: some of Evans's best tunes, sympathetic playing by all, tactfully omitting piano, and Lovano's most sensitive work. Motian's and Johnson's histories with Evans were clearly an important factor when this was made.
It starts out flawlessly with Frisell's beautiful intro to 'Show-Type Tune' and a melody statement worthy of Evans himself. 'Turn Out the Stars' and 'Time Remembered' are gorgeous as they should be, and the faster pieces are handled with great skill and aplomb.
Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars a good tribute that's missing something, September 16, 2007
This review is from: Bill Evans (Audio CD)
"Bill Evans: Tribute to the Great Post-Bop Pianist" is another enjoyable disc by the Paul Motian, Bill Frisell and Joe Lovano trio. The addition of Marc Johnson has this quartet hark back to Johnson's "Bass Desires" project that also included Frisell. As always, the integrity is unquestionably high given this super group. That written, there's something missing. As with the other releases by the Motian, Frisell and Lovano group, the music is always good but it never quite becomes compelling. Lacking persuasive melodies and interesting arrangements, this project is permeated with blandness and predictability. There is the sense that these guys could do something great, but they'd rather not. While "Bill Evans: Tribute to the Great Post-Bop Pianist" may not be memorable, it stands as a high quality tribute to one of the greatest jazz pianists.
