From Heroes to Friends,

This review is from: Bill Gaither Remembers Homecoming Heroes (DVD)
One of the best things about these homecoming friends and heroes DVDs is you are sure to be taken back to the time when the Friends concerts were so memorable, with the old timer gospel veterans. And here, the 2nd volume of remembrances features George Younce, Jake Hess, Bob Cain, Brock Speer, Rex Nelon, and The Happy Goodmans, Vestal and Howard. Music is song clips, interviews, and some full songs.
Bill Gaither tells the viewers how as a young man, he saw many of these gospel greats perform and now with the creation of the Homecoming concerts, these heroes have become his dear friends. As Jake Hess said, their careers were peaked; and it was Bill Gaither who gave life to their careers. George Younce (1930-2005) from the Cathedrals, sings bass and very often he is storytelling and he tells about his deep friendship with member Glen Payne. Here you will see "The Laughing Song", and "Suppertime". Younce had serious health issues. One of the most enjoyable was Jake Hess (1927-2004); it was always fun to hear his musical choices and watch his expressions as he sang. Songs include "I Know Where I Am Right Now", "Come One and Sing" and "Faith Unlocks the Door." A Bill and Gloria Gaither: Tribute to Jake Hess. Somebody I did not see often was Bob Cain (1939-2000); Gaither called him a poet troubadour and said he was the first to bring a trumpet. Hear him do a beautiful version of Kris Kristofferson's "Why Me Lord" plus, "I Got A New Song to Sing" and "One More Valley." Another member I never saw in the concert series was Rusty Goodman (1933-1990), member of the Happy Goodmans, father to singer Tanya Goodman. Rusty's songwriting has left a legacy. Also honoring Rusty Goodman, is Vestal (1929-2003) and Howard (1921-2002). Howard tells the story how Vestal's voice forever came alive one night. The Happy Goodmans - Celebrating 50 Years of Marrige, Ministry and Music Gaither Gospel Series. One of my favorite old timers is Rex Nelon (1933-2000), another bass voice, and Gaither tells how Rex loved and wanted to preserve the old convention songs, so he bought the companies that had the rights. Rex died the night before the Bill & Gloria Gaither - London Homecoming. A most popular family was the Speer Family, and you will see clips of Brock Speer (1920-1999) and his wife's 45th anniversary. You will often see the remaining Speer Family, brother Ben, and two sisters amongst the Friends. Songs include "He Touched Me"; "When All God's Singers Get Home" and "Child of the King". This is a memorable and the 2nd volume of Homecoming Heroes Remembered. ....Rizzo

Bill Gaither Remembers Homecoming Heroes is a great video. All eight of the performers have been great favorites of mine and it is great to have a DVD for remembering them. The video gives a review of their careers, interviews and memorials.
I am really glad I bought this DVD.

It was good to learn a little more about the individual artists. Usually you just hear them sing, but the remembering Heroes DVD gives you some insight to the artist, where they come from and something of their struggles and triumps.Anyone who enjoys the Gaither DVD's i would recomend this one.

This video is FULL of wonderful people and songs, but Bill starts talking about them and they don't finish the songs! Seems to me it would have been just as easy to tell the stories and still let us hear the entire song. I found it frustrating - beautiful, but frustrating.
