Unsung Vocalist,
By Karen Clancy (Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bill Henderson With the Oscar Peterson Trio (Audio CD)
Wow...I am thrilled to find this album. Mine was stolen with all my other cassettes about nine years ago. Bill Henderson has one of the smoothest styles I have ever come across. To pair up with the imcomparable Oscar Peterson lends the album a hipness that finds its way down to the cellular level. Simplicity, soul, fun, and enjoyment are in his voice in every song. You can almost hear his smile. I know them all by heart!

Bill Henderson? Who?... Wow! What a voice,

This review is from: Bill Henderson With the Oscar Peterson Trio (Audio CD)
I first heard this album while I was on the dance floor and the DJ was playing "You Are My Sunshine." Wow... I ran over to him afterwards, and the next day I was searching for this CD.Bill Henderson has a crisp voice, and the Oscar Peterson Trio complements it nicely. "A Lot Of Livin' To Do" is a fine example. From the serene ballads on this CD to the swinging tracks like, "I See Your Face Before Me" this is a great album for any occasion. If you haven't heard Bill Henderson's voice before, it's about time you have. Other top-notch albums with Henderson's vocals include his Complete Vee & Jay Recordings Volumes 1 and 2. Both are great.

Unknown Jazz Vocalist Amazing!,

This review is from: Bill Henderson With the Oscar Peterson Trio (Audio CD)
It is amazing that Bill Henderson never received the acclaim of the jazz world beyond insiders like Frank Sinatra and Charlie Haden who knew how good he is. Henderson is a wonderful interpreter of ballads and this recording with Oscar Peterson is filled with gems. Don't miss it if you love jazz vocals!

Smiling Fish & Goat On Fire...,

This review is from: Bill Henderson With the Oscar Peterson Trio (Audio CD)
I discovered this guy from watching a movie...Smiling Fish & Goat On Fire. I looked him up on IMDB and he's had an interesting career...character actor in 43 films and 33 TV shows plus over a dozen jazz albums. So I thought I would check one out and he's quite good. He is a jazz/balladeer in the vein of Joe Williams or Tony Bennett. This album was originally released in 1963 and the CD reissue has 4 bonus tracks. Nice vocals & great band. Oscar Peterson and Ray Brown are two of my fave musicians. Henderson still plays around a lot in the LA area.

Bill Henderson's Secret,
By John Holliday (Hoover, Alabama) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bill Henderson With the Oscar Peterson Trio (Audio CD)
Bill Henderson performs standards with the Oscar Peterson Trio and the result is wonderful. Bill Henderson may not be a household name among the truly great jazz singers, but I'd say he's just a hair shy of the talent of Joe Williams. Still, most of the jazz greats have performed these songs before. Certainly, Oscar Peterson is always worth a listen, and his trio alone would have made this a special album. But what makes this album one of the all time great jazz albums is Bill Henderson's acting ability. Anyone who has seen INSIDE MOVES or GET CRAZY or even THE ADVENTURES OF BUCKAROO BANZAI knows that Henderson is one of the great character actors of the 20th century, but his ability to manifest this on an audio recording is nothing less than amazing. Great cabaret singers know how to sell a song. Henderson sells every song here. "Stranger on the Shore" is a lost gem. Henderson takes "The Folks Who Live on the Hill" and brings "Darby and Joan" to three dimensional life.Of my collection, I'd place this recording with Joe Williams' "Nothing But the Blues" and Andrea Marcovicci's "Songs of World War II" - sung and acted with immaculate skill.

Return to the Song and its meaning,
By A Customer
This review is from: Bill Henderson With the Oscar Peterson Trio (Audio CD)
I thoroughly enjoyed this CD as the masterful singing of the songs was a refreshing surprise. Mr. Henderson sings in an uncomplicated manner and brings the words and the song to life. In a world of scattered scat singers and flat sounding impressions of classic jazz standards, Henderson makes the music fun, not to belittle the downright virtuosic playing of one Oscar Peterson and his trio in such an accompanied setting. The songs 'You are my sunshine', 'The lamp is low', and 'At long last love' are truly classic Bill Henderson and are bound to be enjoyed for their intimacy and class brought to the music by the artist.
