Book Description

July 8, 1999
They are one of history's most remarkable couples: he the country-boy populist oozing ambition and Southern charm, she the brilliant lawyer with a taste for power and prestige...only to have his reckless behvior bring them to the brink of personal and political ruin. Despite the billiions of words that have been written about Bill and Hillary, the true nature of their relationship has remained a jealously guarded secret...until now.

In the manner of his headline-making No. 1 New York Times bestseller The Day Diana Died, and his bestselling books about another President and First Lady, Jack and Jackie and Jackie After Jack, Christopher Andersen draws on important sources--many speaking here for the first time--to take readers on a fascinating journey inside the world's most talked-about marriage.

Amazon.com Review

The gamy tale told by Andersen (a biographer of Jack and Jackie Kennedy) is heartbreaking because it portrays Bill Clinton as a rapist, and because the juiciest of Andersen's scary stories are the toughest to pin down. Lots of his sources are anonymous, and when there's been conflicting public testimony, he tends to go with the most lurid accusations. If Bill really had a 30-year affair with Dolly Kyle Browning, one supposes he might have nicknamed her "Pretty Girl," but when she testifies that Hillary's body odor was overwhelming, one wants corroboration.

Does Bill really proudly check off the days on his calendar when he doesn't cheat on Hillary? Did he chase Barbra Streisand around a piano, have rough sex with Miss America, grope a woman's breasts in the bathroom at his own wedding reception, and seduce a major campaign contributor's future niece-in-law at her engagement party? Did he bed Susan "Hot Pants" McDougal, rock groupie "Sweet Sweet Connie" Hamzy, Robyn "Thumbs" Dickey, Gennifer "Pookie" Flowers, three beauty queens, 30 different women while campaigning in Arkansas, and hundreds of others? Did Bill hit up 50 ex-lovers for campaign cash? Did a prostitute he met while jogging near the governor's mansion bear his child? Does Bill call Hillary "Hilla the Hun" and "The Warden," and did she bed suicidal White House legal advisor Vince Foster? Did stress over Bill's satyriasis send Hillary and Chelsea to the hospital? Are the Clintons as cruel, destructive, and hopelessly in love as Andersen claims? Who knows? If not, this is the raciest first-family fiction since Primary Colors. --Tim Appelo --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Booklist

"Outing" should be Andersen's middle name. Busting out with the success of his The Day Diana Died, Andersen reveals things about the Hillary and Vincent Foster affair. Bonnie Smothers --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

3.0 out of 5 stars A look into the dynamics of a relationship., March 23, 2000

This review is from: Bill and Hillary: The Marriage (Audio Cassette)
I bought the book to get an idea of how the Clintons work and how they got where they are. What keeps them going, what keeps them together? I was not dissapointed but I was sadened by the insight. While the tale seems to hit the highlights of their journy together with more honesty than much of what is written about them, it is not spellbinding. I don't know if it the writing or the subject. As the Clinton presidency nears the end we may not have seen the last of their political ambition. It is worth reading in order to understand what drives this ambitious couple.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bill and Hillary Should Never Have Married, February 13, 2000

Many people have put this book down as trash. I do not. I couldn't put the book down as it fascinated me. It reveals Bill's and Hillary's lives from childhood to their marriage to the presidency. It tells of how they met and all of Hillary's hygiene habits - which were few - during her college days. (I was in college when they were and I shaved my legs, used deodorant, and washed and combed my hair. Why Hillary didn't is a mystery to me.) There were facts in this book that I had not read or heard about before. Bill is a Rhodes scholar. Hillary cussed and hollered at Bill 85% of their marriage. She knew that he was a womanizer before she married him and married him anyway. Before the White House, she had him investigated by private detectives and knew of his huge amount of indiscretions so her boo-hoo sobbing over the Monica thing is redundant. Both had hidden agendas when they married each other. She could ride on Bill's coattails to the White House and Bill could pick her brain when he needed to. Maybe Hillary really loved Bill, but Bill married her for political reasons only. He calls her "The Warden" to many of his conquests, ladies of the evening and long-standing girlfriends. What kind of love is that? The author did not take sides - he just wrote his interviews and findings in a very interesting and easy-to-read forum. I knew Hillary was a cold woman and Bill was likeable and easy, but with a temper out of the public eye. This book reveals behind-the-scenes instances of these character flaws. Did you know Bill was found groping a woman in the bathroom at his and Hillary's wedding reception? Did you know the extent of Vince and Hillary's affair...just how serious it really was? Did you know that Hillary is partly responsible for Vince's deep depression and ultimate suicide? Did you know that Bill met with Sharon Stone? You have got to read this book and find out these shocking details that were only vaguely touched on in the media.

4.0 out of 5 stars Questionable journalism but rings true, September 15, 1999
By A Customer
As I read this book, two things struck me. First, the book is fast and loose in terms of journalistic standards. Second, however, is that, based upon what we do know, much of it rings true. The real question, and one that objective people will answer yes, is "Do you think, based upon what we do know, that the Clintons are capable of this kind of behavior?"
