A Tip Of My Hat To "The Midnight Cowboy", April 3, 2010
This review is from: Bill Mack's Memories from the Trenches of Broadcasting (Paperback)
Bill Mack is known today on XM/Sirius Radio as "The Satellite Cowboy". Yet, many years ago when I was a young, aspiring country singer, I would stay up all night listening to Bill Mack's Open Road Show on WBAP 820 out of Ft. Worth. Famous back then as "The Midnight Cowboy", Bill played the best in country music from midnight till daybreak, and I would lie in bed in Waco, hanging on every song. Bill, more than anyone else, is probably responsible for turning me into the night-owl that I am today!
I always got the sense from Bill's show that, not only was he playing the best country music out there, but that he knew each artist personally, as a friend. Well, my young intuition was right on the money. "Bill Mack's Memories From The Trenches of Broadcasting", all these years later, brings those friendships into full focus. This book is obviously a labor of love... love, and dedication to the great institution of country music, the artists who made it what it was (and should still be), and the radio programmer who had the insight, vision, and dedication to help bring them to the forefront of American culture.
Bill, after a failed collaboration, finally decided to write the book HIS way, and I'm glad he did. It is an honest, heartfelt account of a colorful life in country music broadcasting, and the larger-than-life artists who inspired that journey. I couldn't put the book down; it was short read - from midnight till daybreak, by a man you all know as The Satellite Cowboy, but who'll always be "The Midnight Cowboy" to me. Cool book, Bill, thanks for keeping me up all night!

A very enjoyable addition to Bill Mack's program on XM Radio Channel 13, Mondays thru Fridays. And the photos and biographies of Bill and Cindy give more life to the program.

Got it for my wife as a Christmas present. She really enjoyed the book. It was something like glue, she couldn't leave it alone, would read it any extra time she could find.
