Editorial Reviews

2012 release, a collection of Bill Monroe covers that Bluegrass musician Tony Rice recorded over a 15 year time span with various musicians. In honor of Bill Monroe's centennial birthday celebration and revered as the Gold Standard of Bluegrass guitar, Tony Rice in many ways has made as deep and unmistakable a mark on Bluegrass as the father of Bluegrass himself. Rice captures something quite different from the originals, yet achingly pure and equally true, cutting straight-to-the-heart of any of this material.

Tony Rice has released so much material, both under his own name and as part of other bands, that it is easy to release a greatest hits package. The Bluegrass Album band released an album of Bill Monroe songs, and Tony Rice released a sort of "Flat Picking Greatest Hits" album with some Bill Monroe songs. The most important thing to remember about this album is the material is not newly recorded. It is simply a re-re-release of Tony Rice in different iterations covering Bill Monroe Songs. If you have never heard him before, buy this album, you are in for a treat; but if you have heard of him, and records of him covering Bill Monroe you already have this album, all you will be buying is the same material repackaged.

The centennial anniversary of Bill Monroe's birth has produced an outpouring of tributes (e.g., 1 2 3 4 5) from many of the musicians who've descended from the master's vision. Each of the disciples has played Monroe's tunes on stage and recorded them sporadically, but with these tributes they've made album length statements about their relationship to the music and the man. Tony Rice has also played and recorded Monroe's music, but instead of recording a purpose-built tribute, his label has cherry-picked fourteen tracks from nine albums released between 1981 and 2000. This includes solo titles and sessions with David Grisman, the Tony Rice Unit, the Rice Bothers and the Bluegrass Album Band.

Fans may already have many of these tracks on original albums or previous collections (Lonesome Moonlight: Bluegrass Songs of Bill Monroe and The Bluegrass Guitar Collection), but for those not steeped in the Tony Rice catalog, this is a fine anthology.

I thought this would be a compilation of new instrumental material that Tony had recorded recently, but not so -- this is simply a repackaging of stuff that Tony has already released with the Bluegrass Album Band or his own band. And since I already had most of his back-catalog, this CD merely repeats (sometimes for the third or fourth time) stuff I already have on other CDs.

That being said: this is still Tony Rice, who is one of the best acoustic guitar players of all time. (Not simply one of the best bluegrass pickers; one of the best acoustic players, period.) So if you're new to Tony's stuff or are just a Big Mon fan who wants to hear Monroe material interpreted by someone else, this CD may be just what you're looking for.

I really wish Tony would record new stuff. I know that his voice is gone, but his guitar playing is as sharp as ever, and I'd welcome a album of new instrumental pieces -- maybe from his newgrass/jazz combo The Tony Rice Unit. His recent work with Peter Rowan has been excellent as well.
