Book Description

June 10, 2008 0761840753 978-0761840756
The proper role of the government operating in a free society and regulating an individual's behavior is a subject that can provoke heated political debate. There is an ongoing discussion among the nine Justices of the U.S. Supreme Court about the fundamental values that are reflected in the words of the Bill of Rights. If we contrast the interpretation of the Bill of Rights presented by the Earl Warren Court four decades ago with the more recent decisions handed down by the Rehnquist and Roberts Court, we cannot avoid the conclusion that there has been a substantial change in the rights enjoyed by Americans. In referring to these changes, Justice Stephen Breyer recently wrote: "It is not often in the law that so few have so quickly changed so much."

In The Bill of Rights Today, attorney and political scientist Joseph Dillon Davey examines the most controversial cases handed down by the Supreme Court and shows how the issues involved in these cases have profound implications for American society. Davey emphasizes the most controversial issues being faced by the High Court today and challenges our perspective on the role the Supreme Court Justice plays in determining the extent society will continue to enjoy the freedoms outlined in the U.S. Constitution.

2.0 out of 5 stars needs a lot of work, don't bother, April 2, 2009
This review is from: The Bill of Rights Today: Constitutional Limits on the Powers of Government (Paperback)
we bought 30 copies of this book for a class on constitutional law that we are teaching in a prison. the book is very poorly written and edited. there are typos on every single page (even where supreme court opinions are simply reprinted), and even major errors that effect legal principles (for example, the fourth amendment doctrine of protected "curtilege" around one's home was continually referred to as "cartilage"). way too much "editorial voice" without any support, and the book also barely touches on the criminal procedure amendments (4th, 5th, 6th, which are incredibly important). I would not recommend this book until it receives a LOT more editing.

1.0 out of 5 stars Falacies, February 19, 2012
This review is from: The Bill of Rights Today: Constitutional Limits on the Powers of Government (Paperback)
This book is easily the most ill conceived collaboration of words I have ever read. It is filled with misinformed "truth", fallacies, and liberal talking points. The person who wrote this book wanted nothing more than to earn extra money by having students purchase his textbook. It is filled with grammatical errors, spelling errors, and flat out lies. The company that published this book should be ashamed to have even put their names on such a terrible book. The teacher who created this book spouts nothing but political rhetoric instead of teaching facts, it was written by the most narcissistic person I have ever met, if you love the sound of your own voice (assuming you're liberal) sure, you're going to love this own book because it repeats the same rhetoric you hear on NBC, nothing but bashing the republican party and attacking the conservatives on the supreme court. I advise anyone taking this class to drop it early, (I got an A in the class) you will learn NOTHING but lies which will hurt you in later classes. Joseph Dillon Davey is one of the most irresponsible teachers at Rowan University, he uses his time to push his political persuasion and agenda onto students, when in debates he will filibuster and close his mind to the truth. He brags that he will never be fired because he has tenor, and pumps out a hundred students every semester teaching them nothing but lies and putting fallacies into their heads, virtually turning every one of these people who do not pay attention to anything but facebook, into liberal drones. It is irresponsible for students who spend so much on tuition to have to listen to a teacher like this who treats his classroom as a place for him to toot his own horn and spread lies.
