Great Variety, Awesome CD,
By Doesn't Matter (New York City, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (1991 Film) (Audio CD)
This is actually an awesome rock CD. It starts out with a pair of songs from “hair bands” Slaughter and Winger. Slaughter does a cover of the Kiss song “Shout It Out” and “Battle Stations” is actually one of Winger’s hardest songs and probably their best song. Reb Beach sounds better than ever on this track. The next song up is by Kiss and it’s a cover of God Gave Rock and Roll To You. While it is a great song, it wears thin after awhile, despite that Bruce Kulick and Paul Stanley both sound great on that track. I’ll skip the wanker tracks and get right to the next great song. Actually, that’s not fair. The next track is “Drinking Again” by Neverland. It’s just not for me. So, next up is Richie Kotzen’s “Dream Of A New Day”. This is before his ill fated stint as Poison’s guitarist. This song is great. The guitar is simply amazing and the song should have been the single released from the album. Considering the time, it would have easily been a top ten hit. Next up is Steve Vai. This guy is amazing. The greatest guitar player ever. This is a wicked track. No form, no structure, just Vai blazing away. This is one of the coolest guitar instrumentals you’ll ever hear. I prefer to listen to this over anything from Eric Johnson or Joe Satriani. The guitar is just from another planet. That’s it for side one, side two isn’t quite as pop oriented. It kicks of with tracks from Faith No More, Megadeth and Primus. And actually, possibly the best songs those bands have ever done. “The Perfect Crime” is the type of song that would have been rammed down your throat if Red Hot Chili Peppers had been creative enough to do it... It’s awesome. “Go To Hell” is definitely one of Megadeth’s better tracks. Between the title and the band you can pretty much figure out what the song is like. The Primus track is, well, different. But of course, it’s Primus. The bass is cool and the vocals are a bit odd, but its actually really catchy. Not a song you’re likely to hear on the radio, but still I think it’s their best ever. This is actually the song that was played in the movie during the battle of the bands, by the band that went on right before Bill and Ted. The next song is amazing and is worth the price of the CD by itself. Kings X, “Junior’s Gone Wild”. It’s hardcore and definitely the highlight of this awesome CD. I honestly can’t think of anyone else or any other song to compare it too right now. I guess for reference, the music sounds a bit like Jane’s Addiction, but the vocals are completely different. “Showdown” by Love On Ice. See my comments on “Drinking Again” by Neverland. Finally, “The Reaper Rap” by Steve Vai. This is pretty cool. It’s more of Steve Vai’s guitar wizardy thrown around audio clips from the movie. It’s camp, and it works. Funny stuff, with some amazing music around it. This is one of the best hard rock soundtracks you could ever hope to get. 12 songs, and only two that aren’t absolutely incredible. I’m not trying to knock those other two songs, but everything else on this CD is SO good, it would be hard for most bands to keep up. This is just a great CD, and is still fun to listen to today

I couldn't help but notice that this album isn't given a track listing here on Amazon.com. It's an awesome album - they even included THE REAPER RAP (yes yes yes - where else are you gonna find that? ;), and where else can you hear Primus before they hit it big? Not to mention Megadeath. So here's the low down.1)Slaughter - Shout It Out 4)Neverland - Drinking Again

If you're into super hard-rockin' tunes, this one's for you. From the opening track to the lenghty Reaper Rap, it doesnt slow down one bit! Primus is better than ever, and Megadeth make beautiful music once again. Hitting beats and loud guitars, all in one. Too bad nobody carries it anymore, I sure would buy 5 extra copies. Anyway, 100% metal and you won't be disappointed.

Good sampling of early-90's metal (plus Primus),

This review is from: Bill and Teds Bogus Journey (Audio CD)
I've thought for a while that if 80's-style metal hadn't been so thoroughly killed off by grunge post-Nirvana, it would have developed into some very interesting directions. While the Bogus Journey soundtrack didn't include anything incredibly groundbreaking (well... besides Primus) it was a good overview of the state of metal at that point in time.
You had the bog-standard Winger, Love on Ice, and Slaughter tracks(the low points of the album, but still very listenable), the driving "Dream of a New Day" by Ritchie Kotzen, the Seattle-esque "Drinking Again" by Neverland, and the always-enjoyable Steve Vai. The easy high-points of the collection are the aggressive, powerful "Perfect Crime" by Faith No More and Megadeth's "Go to Hell" - which is incredibly dark even by Megadeth standards. And then, to top it off, there's Primus. Being Primus. Not much more to say there. All in all, it's well worth the penny + shipping it'll take to buy it from most sellers. Apart from a few throwaway tracks from bands that never grew past 1985, everyone puts on a solid show of some of their best work.

I'm a huge Bill & Ted fan, for I absolutely love the movies! I also absolutely love the music, it is indeed most excellent!
This soundtrack is to the Bill & Ted sequel, Bogus Journey. It is indeed very good, but has it's pros and cons. I'll list why each song is great, or not so great, and also where they can be found in the movie. 1. Shout It Out - Slaughter = (This can be found: When Evil Bill and Ted are trashing the apartment and playing basketball with their heads.) This is a great song to start out the CD, it delivers with lots of force and lots of rock n roll! I throughly enjoy it! Party On! 5/5 2. Battle Stations - Winger = (This can be found: As Bill, Ted, Death and Station head to the Battle of the Bands and Station builds the good robot Bill and Ted.) This is one of the most excellent songs on the entire CD, and one of my absolute favorites! There's nothing left to say but STATION!!! 5/5 3. God Gave Rock & Roll to You - Kiss = (Bill and Ted's big performance at the end of the film and into the end credits. The guitar introduction in the movie was performed by Steve Vai and does not appear on the soundtrack album.) If you are Bill & Ted fan, as well as a KISS fan, you won't be dissapointed with this song at all! Another reason why I love the CD; this is without a doubt one of the best rock anthems! As the title says: God Gave Rock & Roll to You! 5/5 4. Drinking Again - Neverland = (This song does not actually appear in the film. Another song by Neverland entitled For the Love (of Music) appears in the scene when dead Bill and Ted return to their apartment to find the evil robots trying to make out with their girlfriends. The musical introduction to this song was used on television commercials to promote Bogus Journey, however.) This was a very good track as well, and I throughly enjoy it as well! 5/5 5. Dream of a New Day - Richie Kotzen = (This can be found: As Bill, Ted, Death and Station arrive at the Builder's Emporium.) This is one most excellent song, and it one of my new favorites! It's pure rock n roll! Most outstanding! 5/5 6. Reaper - Steve Vai = (This can be found: Leaving the auditorium after the Battle of the Bands audition and during Joanna and Elizabeth's 521st birthday party.) This is one of Steve Vai's most excellent pieces! It's all instrumental, to what is exactly the music used for the song the Reaper Rap! Even without the moviie quotes, it's just as good and most excellent! Makes me just want to play air guitar all day! 5/5 7. Perfect Crime - Faith No More = (This can be found: When Evil Bill and Ted are driving Bill and Ted out to the Vasquez Rocks.) This is without a doubt one of the most rock driven songs on the entire album, and it always makes me bang my head like a rocker! Plus it's Faith No More, a most excellent band Bill & Ted love in the film! I'm sure those who love this song as much as me, will be singing a long as well! 5/5 8. Go to Hell - Megadeth = (This can be found: When Evil Bill and Ted lead Bill and Ted up Vasquez Rocks and proceed to kill them.) If you are a Megadeth fan, and you love your metal, this is a song that'll get you into jamming along! I love Megadeth, they're one of my top favorite metal bands! This song is one of their greatest! 5/5 9. Tommy the Cat - Primus = (Primus is seen performing this song during the 4th Annual Battle of the Bands.) This was one of those songs that wasn't that good, because I couldn't stand the sound of it for too long. But it's a key Primus song! Let's hear it for Primus; NOT! 2/5 10. Junior's Gone Wild - King's X = (This can be found: Very briefly as Evil Bill and Ted eye and decide to bag the Porsche while standing on Vasquez Rocks.) This was a not bad song, I would just say it was only good. Not one of my favorites, but this song has lots of rock n roll in it! 4/5 11. Showdown - Love on Ice = (This can be found: When Bill and Ted close Death into the back of the van with the Stations and when Evil Bill & Ted are driving to Ted's Dad's house.) This is a nice and mellow rock song, which gets me into the groove! Another new favorite of mine! 4/5 12. Reaper Rap - Steve Vai (This can be found: Over the end credits once God Gave Rock and Roll to You II is finished.) Finally we reach the most excellent Steve Vai's song, the Reaper Rap! The moviie quotes are what make this song most excellent! And I always can't help myself by reciting these quotes; I'm that big of a Bill & Ted fan! 5/5 If you absolutely love the Bill & Ted movies and music, get this CD; you just may like it! And most importantly, do not listen to this CD without wearing headphones! And party on dudes! :D

As cheesy as the first Bill & Ted movie was, the sequel - Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey - was even worse. Naturally I saw it about a dozen times as a teenager. Part of the movie's charm, and what made it such a great snapshot of the early 90's pre-grunge pop culture landscape, was its soundtrack.
The soundtrack relies heavily on melodic rock and hair metal (Slaughter, Winger, Kiss, Neverland, and Richie Kotzen), which was still the dominant form of rock at the time, though it also includes entries by thrashers Megadeth and more avant garde acts like Primus, Faith No More and King's X, as well as guitar hero Steve Vai. The hair metal songs are passable (though far from the respective artists' best work), and the guitar hero tracks have the biggest ties to the movie. It's the material from Megadeth, King's X, Primus, and Faith No More that really stands out. Hair metal, much as I love it, was getting stale in the 90's, and it was the bands that pushed the envelope that got the most attention and excitement. Megadeth's "Go to Hell" is one of their most malicious thrashers, and "The Perfect Crime" remains one of my favorite Faith No More songs. The songs from Primus, and King's X are also great examples of artists that refused to be constrained by current trends. If you're a fan of the movie, or just want a great snapshot of the turbulent early 90's rock scene, this soundtrack is a great choice. Party on, dudes!

Great Rock album, i just got to differ with the other reviews, the slaughter song is NOT a KISS cover, you should get more into rock before getting into reviews, but all in all a great album

I purchased this album simply because it had a track from Faith No More. It is one of their best songs, too, in my opinion. So, it's worth the price right there. I haven't seen it on any of their greatest hits or compilation CDs, so for a fan, this is a must buy. However, there is some other great stuff on here. If you grew up on 80s hair metal, there is Slaughter and Winger with 2 of their best songs.
Grayantimatter from 2001 left a review that I disagree with. Kotzen and Vai, though excellent guitarists, left poor tracks on this disc. I always skip past them, especially Kotzen's. I always hold up Vai as an example of a talent who can't write a song. I respect him as an artist, but I just can't listen to his stuff. It's all over the place. Grayantimatter also mentioned that the Neverland and Love on Ice tracks stink. Never heard of them? Of course not. But I really like these songs. I purchased their full length albums because I was surprised with these songs, and they were both unlistenable. These are their only good songs, so enjoy them. Megadeth's Go to Hell is extremely average. They pretty much phoned this one in. If you've ever heard of Primus, you've probably heard Tommy the Cat, so there's no surprise here. Kiss is Kiss. What do you expect? So, while there are some poor songs on here, the good is really, really good. Buy it for the FNM, but check the rest out, too. |
