Tripping Daisy's Best,
By gershwin fan (Plano, TX, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bill (Audio CD)
This album "blows away" everything else by the Dallas band. One of the best debut albums by ANYONE in the 90's, Bill starts out strong with My Umbrella and never gives up it's unique, hard-rock edge. "Blown Away" is one of the best pure rock songs you'll hear. Early Daisy fans were hoping for more of this with subsequent albums that ended up falling short. There'll never be another Bill though, or Wes (we know you're watching :)

The Original...The Best,
This review is from: Bill (Audio CD)
I remember seeing Tripping Daisy play on the lure tour back in '92. The venue, the music, the performance...everything was imbibed with the vibrant music and energy that is still exhibited on this album. A dedicated fan, I buy everything they put out. But like a good woman, this is the one I always come back to in 'The Morning.'

This is an interesting debut CD. The beat is usually simplistic on early albums, but these guys seem to accelerate into the changes. 'Tripping' instead of trippy. Which is good. That said, the production on the vocals is off. Fuzzy, in an irritating way. Songs like Change of Mind, Blown Away and Brown-Eyed Pickle Boy are better because they allowed the vocals to occasionally break through. Miles and Miles of Pain is best because they slowed down and boosted the vocals. I'm harsh on this CD (2 stars) because I rate based on how often I figure to listen to it, and in this case, not often. I'm really hoping their final work, Tripping Daisy, is re-released or comes down in price because I like what I've heard from it. So the band (or its choice in producers) definitely improved.

this was not the first cd i heard from them and i couldn't imagine someting as good as "i'm an elastic firecracker" but now i understand what all the fuss is about!
i can't say if it's better or not but it's definitely an outstanding cd. this band always had a very original sound and even nowadays i listen to it frequently cause it simply makes me happy =)

This is true 90's alternative rock,

I can't believe I just read some guys review and statement that "as with most bands their first album is their weakest"??!! Need I mention Van Halen and INXS as examples of this being completely wrong? Unless you like mainstream bubblegum this is by far TD's best album. I can assure you that albums like this don't come around often and if you had seen this material live like I did you'd have been blown away as well.

This is my least favorite Tripping Daisy album, but that's like saying you have a least favorite James Brown CD: they're all good. In the wake of Nirvana record labels scrambled to sign the "next big rock band." Island got that on this album. My Umbrella all the way to The Morning are superb, and Blown Away is excellent too. Brown Eyed Pickle Boy and Miles and Miles of Pain are the weakest songs, but they lay the blueprint for future Daisy albums, the ones where Wes and Tim and the rest of the boys gelled to creat the perfection heard on Jesus Hits Like the Atom Bomb and the brand new Tripping Daisy.I agree that one should start here and subsequently buy the rest so you can prgress with the band and better understand how the later albums fit into their canon.

Not bad for a debut album,
By TiripsTeerts@juno.com (a small town, across the country from Dallas, Texas, home of Tripping Daisy) - See all my reviews

As with most bands, the debut album is always their weakest material. Some have compared this album to early Pink Floyd music, or Jane's Addiction, and I guess I can see a slight resemblance. This album isn't quite as complete as some of the band's other material. Some songs (like My Umbrella, Blown Away) are more upbeat, rock & roll, while songs like Miles and Miles of Pain, and Triangle are a little more mellow (almost a little too mellow). I still think that no Tripping Daisy collection would be complete without this album in it though. I would like to say, for anyone new to the band, start here, the same place the band started, and then progress to the next album, and experience the changes their music has gone through over the years, and continue to do so until you've been through them all.
