Sliced 'N' Diced,
By
This review is from: Billboard #1's: The 80's (Audio CD)
I purchased this set mainly because of the song lineup. While the mastering of these vintage tracks is typical Rhino, so unfortunately are the edits. The short three minute and change songs are untouched but Golden Earring and Steve Miller are hacked. A mere one minute had been shaved off most tracks clocking in at over four minutes except for Rod Stewart and Mike + The Mechanics. The total time for both cd's is at 50 minutes which leaves 29 minutes of unused programming space per disc and that's a lot of Real Estate. Outside of original album re-issues I pretty much am finished with Rhino.

Rhino Does It Again!,

This review is from: Billboard #1's: The 80's (Audio CD)
I probably would have not bothered to buy this 2-CD compilation set if it hadn't been released by Rhino. Once again, Rhino puts out quality material! While there may be a few tracks that seem to be on every 80's compilation there are enough tracks here that don't make the usual cut. There are some tracks here that I don't quite remember but am happy to have in my collection, considering they were hits and may not get as much exposure as the typical 80's songs. The main reason I gave this collection 5 stars is because of the superb digitally remastering once again by Rhino! It never fails! Every song on here (perhaps with the exception of the live "Mony Mony" track) sounds crisp, bright, and clear! Unfortunately, Rhino didn't bother to make note of their brilliant remastering by placing a "Remastered In Rhinophonic Authentic Sound" logo on the sleeve (as seen on many previous Rhino releases). As a buyer, I like to see this logo! The logo may be missing, but the sound quality is all there! Many of the 80's compilations today are just the original recordings transferred to CD from any random source. Rhino takes the extra step of finding the best original master tapes and using the best available technology to restore these recordings. And that's the difference with this collection! While I may have many of these recordings on other 80's compilations or albums, none sound as crisp as on this Billboard hits 2-disc set! Also I must note that some of these songs are in single edit/version form. Some individuals may complain about edited versions but I can't really complain since I like to hear the original single/edit versions as well. Perhaps a volume 2 issue, Rhino?

It's hard to know what to say about it. Compilations either work or don't. This one does.
A great CD for running.

Great Collection of 80's Hits,

When I saw this advertised on TV I definitely wanted to buy it. Mainly because it has a lot of tracks on it that you don't find on most of the 80's compilations, but yet you do have to suffer through some songs that seem to be on every 80's compilation ever made (like Waiting for a Girl Like You). I rate this 4 instead of 5 because some of the songs were cut from their original recording. Twilight Zone is one of them and also they just have Need You Tonight and not the Mediate part that is at the end of the music video. Still some of the 80's powerhouse artists like Michael Jackson, Madonna, & Whitney Houston were not included but yet the likes of Joe Walsh, Robert Plant's The Honeydrippers, & The Moody Blues were.

80's Guilt,
By Michael Kerner "Michael Kerner" (Brooklyn, New York U.S.A.) - See all my reviews (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Billboard #1's: The 80's (Audio CD)
To be honest with you, there isn't a decade that really hasn't defined music as good as the 1980's. There was just so much that the industry offered, and just so many formats of great music to choose from. The songs were just great and filled with so many guilty pleasures and delights from so many influences and signature tracks. Nevertheless, every 80's compilation really doesn't seem to have every signature song or artist that should be on it, but that is alright. Arguably, when Rhino compiled this collection with Billboard on #1 tracks, they did make some great tracks and styles that truly were signatures to the 1980's. This collection might not define that theory, but it is just a theory of music.
Billboard #1's: The 80's is a 2 disc set of 30 great pop songs from the 80's. There were so many great guilty pleasure tracks of the 80's on here, it just is a compilation for guilt. So many great songs here were compiled from Phil Collins on his own with his 1985 #1 song, One More Night, and his career with Genesis with their only #1 song, Invisible Touch. There are other great 80's tracks, including Pat Benetar on her smash, Love Is A Battlefield, Los Lobos with the only Spanish song to hit #1, La Bamba, and other guilty pleasures. Although this is just like every 80's collection with guilty pleasures like Love Shack from The B-52's, Queen's Another One Bites The Dust, Tommy Tutone's phone number ballad 867-5309 / Jenny, Missing You by John Waite, and the only Grateful Dead Top 10 hit, Touch Of Grey. All in all, just so much here, but more to be longed for. Although you really don't seem to find 80's revolutionary performers like Whitney Houston, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince, Huey Lewis & The News, and others to name, many people may consider Billboard #1's: The 80's, as a compiled list of good 80's tracks. Like every 80's collection, none are ever perfect. This is one that should be glanced at and bought for die hard 80's fanatics.

Since both of my kids were born in the 1980s this is a very popular era of music in our house. These are the songs my kids grew up with.
