Are you a chart junkie?,
By A Customer
This review is from: Billboard Hot 100 Charts - The Eighties (Record Research Series) (Hardcover)
A fantastic little idea from the master of the Billboard charts, Joel Whitburn. I became interested in this book because I looked to revamp my 80's music collection (you know, lost in vinyl), and I had top 40 lists, but as we all know, all great songs DON'T make the top 40! Using this book spurred lots of great memories and gave me a great base to go to Napster and get back some of the great songs of my youth. If you're looking for stories, don't buy it, but if you want a visit down memory lane, and need some titles to get your Lost Hits of the 80's collection started, then this is the book for you!

As one who grew up listening to the music in the eighties, this book was the first in the series that I bought. The book itself contains not more than reproductions of weekly billboard HOT 100 charts from the first week of 1980 to the last of 1989. What makes the book interesting to me is that it brought back the good memories of the decade when I listened to practically each song ever made it to the chart, collected the records and stay tuned to the radio for weekly charts.
This book is probably enjoyable only for those who went through the decade in music.

Expensive, but comprehensive,
By William J. Eichelberger "I will not go quietly" (Ft. Thomas, KY) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Billboard Hot 100 Charts - The Eighties (Record Research Series) (Hardcover)
By the time the 80's rolled around, my Top 40 days had rolled elsewhere, but I still found the charts impossible to completely escape. I was still fascinated by the songs that may have recieved extensive airplay on non-Top 40 stations, but only managed to battle their way into the mid to lower reaches of the charts. Joel Whitburn's chart history books are a goldmine for anyone in my situation and also for anyone who just enjoys the trivialities of the music industry. The reason you don't often see these used is that those who buy them, keep them. Highly recommended.

Joel Whitburn has done all us chart buffs a tremendous favor with his series of books-The 1980's saw the rise of MTV & VH-1,two cable channels that changed the way we perceive popular music-Every "Hot 100" chart from January 1980 to December 1989 is presented-The Police,The Go-Go's,Prince,Pat Benatar,Bryan Adams,& Duran Duran are just some of the artists who made the decade memorable-This is like stepping into a time machine.

Eighties Charts,
This review is from: Billboard Hot 100 Charts - The Eighties (Record Research Series) (Hardcover)
Joel Whitburn's compilation of all the Billboard Hot 100 charts of the 1970's provides you with every list of the most popular songs of the MTV generation. The decade starts off with a 70's hangover of dance music to the new wave to Michael Jackson, Madonna & Bruce Springsteen taking the reins in the mid-years to Whitney Houston and other taking over the end. In between you get hair-metal, video stars and hip-hop all gracing the charts.

This book brought back so many great memories of the Eighties. I remember listening to the Top 40 every week and keeping track of what songs were placed where. Yes, I was a geek, still am. These charts include not just the top 40, but the full top 100 from Billboard. The book is well-organized and even though I pretend to be a know-it-all on Eighties music, this book reminds me of so many songs and artists that I had forgotten about. Great reference tool for when you and friends disagree about the songs you remember from the Eighties. Other books by Whitburn provide great reading material -- this one is all about the charts.

For those of you who grew up in the eighties and loved the music, this book covering the chart history of eighties music in America should be on your book shelf or on your coffee table. I was amazed at which songs didn't quite make the top 40, just shows how different music tastes are.
If you are made about music buy this book!!! |
