Let Me Enlighten You. Please., February 16, 2005
This review is from: Billboard Top Rock'n'Roll Hits: 1955 (Audio CD)
It still amazes me that a reviewer can prepare a review of a CD package but admit that he has never heard of perhaps as many as half of the selections. First, the well-known ones (heard by said reviewer) speak for themselves as classics of the era. In addition, the Moonglows aka Havey Fuqua and the Moonglows, a group which later had Marvin Gaye as a member, had their song overshadowed by the McGuire Sisters' version. (It was a racial thing I think). "Hearts of Stone" by the Fontane Sisters is well-remembered and was covered by at least one country singer and there was a later hit instrumental version by the Bill Black Combo. "Black Denim Trousers..." was a hit for Cheers, a threesome that included multitalented future gameshow host Bert Convy. (He once showed a "video" of him and one of the other two singing the song from back when). The reviewer in question never heard of "Only You" by the Platters?! No "Tweedledee" by Lavern Baker who had many songs in the 50s? And "Crazy Little Mama" was a catch phrase from the song "At My Front Door" in the 50s. Now that you know, you can see the package here is well worth the price. Stay away from reviewers who write "I do not remember" or "who am I?"

and the nostaligia continues..., January 30, 2008
This review is from: Billboard Top Rock'n'Roll Hits: 1955 (Audio CD)
Billboard Top Rock & Roll Hits: 1955 is an affordable CD that gives you ten great rock and roll hits from 1955. The quality of the sound is excellent and the artwork is nicely done.
Bill Haley & His Comets start things off with a bang as they perform their classic hit entitled "Rock Around The Clock." Bill Haley sings this to perfection and I love those electric guitars! The overall musical arrangement really rocks and I have always enjoyed this tune. Listen also for The Penguins doing their "Earth Angel (Will You Be Mine)." The harmonizing is great and very similar to that doo wop sound that was so popular at the time. The arrangement for the piano works well and they never miss a beat on "Earth Angel (Will You Be Mine)," either!
"Hearts Of Stone" by The Fontane Sisters swings and rocks really well; they deliver this so well and the male harmonizing in the background enhances the beauty of this number. "Hearts Of Stone" is easily a highlight of this album.
The Cheers do "Black Denim Trousers" with a lot of style; and there's also The Platters very famous number called "Only You (And You Alone)." "Only You (And You Alone)" is a romantic number dedicated to sweethearts everywhere; and it will make you want to slow dance with your special someone right wherever you are!
LaVern Baker turns in a steaming hot performance on one of my very favorite 1950s rock and roll songs called "Tweedle Dee." "Tweedle Dee" rocks with style, grace and enough raw emotion to make this a classic hit that still sounds great today!
The CD ends well with The Moonglows on "Sincerely." "Sincerely" has great harmonizing as some of the other songs here have--and there's that doo wop flavor to this rock song as well. It all works very well to make "Sincerely" a masterful ending to this album.
Overall, this budget priced CD gives us ten awesome rock and roll hits from 1955. I highly recommend this album for fans of classic 1950s rock and roll and even doo wop.

I Just Love Oldies, March 13, 2006
This review is from: Billboard Top Rock'n'Roll Hits: 1955 (Audio CD)
I was not born yet when these music became so popular. I heard it thru my older cousins who played them. Thats how I started to like Rock and Roll, classic songs and oldies (50s-70s). I never got tired of listening to these collections and they are really wonderful songs, lyrics, composition compared to the type of music nowadays.
