This review is from: Billboard Top Rock'n'Roll Hits: 1970 (Audio CD)
Billboard Top Rock & Roll Hits: 1970 offers ten hot hits that made the airwaves sizzle back in 1970! This surely brings back many fond memories for me; I love this older rock music. Hopefully it will bring back great memories for the people who first heard these tunes on the radio; and newcomers to this style of music would do well to consider this fine CD.

The Shocking Blue kick off the track set of hits with their smash hit entitled "Venus." "Venus" has a great guitar solo and the percussion, drums and more carry the bulk of the musical arrangement. They play and sing this song so well it makes me wanna dance every time I hear it! Awesome! Listen also for "Mama Told Me (Not To Come)" by Three Dog Night. Three Dog Night does an awesome job on "Mama Told Me (Not To Come);" the modulations between major and minor work very well and the guitars are really cool. I love it! The harmonizing of some of the lyrics is very good, too.

The Partridge Family follows with what seems like a softer rock style hit, "I Think I Love You." "I Think I Love You" is a softer type of rock love ballad that still works well as they play this; David Cassidy sings this strong and he never misses a beat! There seems to be a harpsichord in this arrangement--and this impresses me very much.

The Jackson 5 weigh in with their "I Want You Back;" little Michael Jackson sings his heart out and the funky early `70s flavor enhances the natural beauty of this rock tune. The percussion, drums, guitars and more make "I Want You Back" a true highlight of this album. Moreover, there's also an awesome "Spirit In The Sky" by Norman Greenbaum; this number always makes me stop and listen to it because it's just so good. I love the guitar arrangement and the background vocalists sing this without a superfluous note.

Edwin Starr scores big with his hit "War;" this strong, rockin' ballad tells it like it is about war; Edwin Starr delivers this with all his might and it really comes off sounding very good. The album ends with Sugarloaf's "Green-Eyed Lady;" this is one terrific hit and you will like this if you haven't heard it before. Great guitar arrangement on "Green-Eyed Lady," too!

This CD more than amply proves that the early `70s were a great time for some fresh, new rock music that made us want to dance and listen to these songs over and over again. I highly recommend this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars High School Days Revisited, January 21, 2000
This review is from: Billboard Top Rock'n'Roll Hits: 1970 (Audio CD)
1970, the anticipation for me of what the next four years of high school would be like. These songs definitely bring me back without a doubt, the definition of what top 40 AM radio was like. Every song on this CD is great, no fillers here, the only thing I would change about it would be to put the extended version of "Green-Eyed Lady" by Sugarloaf on it. Perfect listening.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth buying just for Spirit In the Sky, March 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Billboard Top Rock'n'Roll Hits: 1970 (Audio CD)
A lot of great tunes on this CD. But it's worth picking up if for nothing else than Norman Greenbaum's great Spirit in the Sky. Greenbaum was a one-hit wonder for good reason: it's his only good song.

This is a good CD, though, with several other gems including the original Venus, Three Dog Night, Sugarloaf and The Partridge Family! Overall, not as good as the '69 Billboard, but still good stuff here.

I ordered several copies of this CD for 50th Birthday gifts. Most of my friends hit that bit 5-OH this year. The music takes you right back to your youth. Each of those to whom I have given this CD has remarked about memories it has recreated for them. No regrets with this one. Each and every song is one you'll know by heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD, November 3, 2002
This review is from: Billboard Top Rock'n'Roll Hits: 1970 (Audio CD)
I got this cd for the simple fact that it has "Vehicle" by the Ides of March. I thought the people at billboard were very wise in making the decision to add that song to this series. Other cool songs included are "The Rapper" and "Green Eyed Lady."

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbeatable seventies!, July 13, 2004
By
This review is from: Billboard Top Rock'n'Roll Hits: 1970 (Audio CD)
This collection stands out among every single 70's song ever broadcast. Some of the ultimate landmark songs include: "I Think I Love You", "The Rapper", and the song that will blast you out of you chair, "War". Almost unbeatable and only surpassed by Billboard 1960. However, quite limited in number of songs, which are only 10 tracks. This particularly CD is pretty much duplicated in Ultimate Seventies Collection-1970. If you own that CD, this is not worth buying, unless you are looking for repeats of these great songs. My recommendation list includes: The "Ultimate Seventies" Collection, Billboard 60's, and Billboard 50's.

5.0 out of 5 stars Recalling what was on the radio in the year 1970, December 25, 2001
This review is from: Billboard Top Rock'n'Roll Hits: 1970 (Audio CD)
Do not be fooled into thinking that the ten songs collected on any particular album in the Billboard Top Rock'N'Roll Hits series represent the top 10 singles from that year or even that they are even all #1 hits. Still, if you were tuned to the radio in 1970 you will recognize every single track in this collection. By rule of thumb with such hit albums is whether or not they add five or more new songs to my music collection. I only have three of these already on CD ("Mama Told Me (Not To Come)," "I Think I Love You" and "I Want Your Back"--I know, pretty embarrassing), and of the seven other tracks there is not one of them that I do not mind listening to, taking me back to the year 1970 when we moved from Japan to New Mexico and I started high school. The only complaint would be that there are only 10 songs, but clearly my criteria has been met. "War" and "Spirit in the Sky" are the most worthy additions, and I think I have a 45 of "Venus" some where around here. I just do not have a record player anymore. Do the math yourself, and if you also come up with five songs you would like to have, pick this puppy up. Hippo Holidays, America.
