I bought The book because my husband lived in McDowell County when he was a boy, also his father worked in the coal mines all his life. My husband also worked in them for a few years. He is really enjoying going back in time and reviewing the way things begun where he lived during his child-hood, and the way coal mining is now.
We never knew there was so much written about the coal mines. It brings back memories on how very hard it was to be a coal miner.
He said it was the hardest job he ever did. He is enjoying all the material written in the book and will keep it for all time

Billon Dollar Coalfield is the third of 3 books that examine the history of community and coal mining in McDowell County, West Virginia. Author Alex Schust started the project in 1999 and these books are the end result of his exhaustive research. Each book is loaded with photographs, maps, engineering drawings, charts and documents that compliment the text and tell the stories of the land speculators, coal companies, steel companies and workers that made McDowell County the leading coal producer in the country. This book is focused on the communities along the main line and branches of the Norfolk & Western Railway. The heyday of these communities is long past, and much of the evidence has disappeared. Author Schust has done us all a service by creating these 3 books. This volume is 633 pages, printed on quality paper with high quality photo reproduction. All 3 books are outstanding book and highly recommended. But I have to say I think this is the best of the three.
