Intelligent Science Fiction History,

This review is from: Billion Year Spree: The True History of Science Fiction (Hardcover)
Aldiss presents an intelligent history of science fiction from Mary Shelly to 1973. Of course, a lot has been written in the genre since, but this book is still a valuable account of its beginnings. Especially interesting is his comparison of two early sf giants, H.G. Wells and Edgar Rice Burroughs.
