Format: Paperback
"Billy Batson and the Power of Shazam!" is one of the most enjoyable and at the same time most disappointing comics in recent memory. It was a classic move of bait and switch, where you are lured into a series with the promise of an incredible writer/artist producing memorable work, only to have that writer/artist disappear a few issues into the series to be replaced by someone of much lesser talents.

This paperback edition collects issues 1-6 of the "Billy and the Power of Shazam!" series, the first four of which are stunning brilliance. The series is a continuation of Jeff Smith's awesome Shazam!: The Monster Society of Evil mini-series, which featured probably the most authentic modern take of the Marvel Family cast in an out-of-continuity world of their own (Earth-S?). The torch was passed to Mike Kunkel (of the acclaimed Herobear And The Kid series) to carry on the adventures of Billy Batson and his little sister Mary in a kid-friendly comic in the Johnny DC imprint that retained the fun and whimsical nature of the original Fawcett comics.

When Mike Kunkel is doing the series, it really is both fun and fantastic. The first few pages of the first issue are all written in the Secret Code of the Monster Society giving everyone a chance to pull out their decoder cards. Homages like that to the original Fawcett comics are really appreciated by long-time fans.

I COULDN"T DISAGREE MORE WITH THE PREVIOUS REVIEW!!!

As a fan of the original Captain Marvel stories from the 1940s, I found Franco and Art Baltazar's stories to herald back to the original concept. This was one comic book I looked forward to reading every month because those two comic creator's understood the meaning of a whimsical adventure story and yet could bring us a vision of these decades-old characters from sparkling new 21st century lenses. The only comparison I can make to Franco and Baltazar's revamp of SHAZAM! would be the reboot of Doctor Who on TV several years ago. And the stories only get better as they go along!!!

Awesome interpretation of a classic character. The sketchy, animated style that Mike Kunkel uses gives Captain Marvel a youthful appeal.
