Editorial Reviews

This is the first official Billy Joe Royal greatest-hits package, released by Columbia in 1989. All of his early soul/country/pop hits are included: "Down in the Boondocks," "Cherry Hill Park," "Yo-Yo," "Hush," and his final hit for the label, a cover of the Drifters' classic "Under the Boardwalk." As a companion piece, pick up Royal's Greatest Hits [Atlantic], covering his country hits from the '90s. -All Music Guide

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the best choice, March 24, 2001
This is simply a transfer of the LP master done when CDs were just getting started. The quality is inferior to other collections and the selection is weaker. Go for the Collectables twofer instead. Much better sound and more cuts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent recordings for listening and dancing, December 23, 1998
Burned Like A Rocket, I Miss You Already, Old Bridges Burn Slow, Love Has No Right.. just a few super examples of Billy Joe's work. Over 20 years ago, I saw him put on a wonderful performance, to include being appreciative of his audience. Perhaps he needs a better manager to get his talent out in the public and on the air again as he was one of the first really talented cross-over pop/country artists that just hasn't been given the promotion he deserves. His pop & country selections can be easily understood and the majority can easily be danced to. The icing on the cake is that he has written or co-written some of his recordings. The range he commands lends itself to respectible clean verbage. My records and cassetts of his early days were stolen not too long ago and it aggrivates me to have to lose those originals but I am finding the clarity of replacing his work through CD's makes it a little less painless. This Greatest Hits album is a winner. Burned Like A Rocket is my favorite on this CD. I couldn't and don't get enough of it on the radio. If Billy Joe hasn't retired then someone needs to reintroduce him to the new country generation and give his God-given talents a new opportunity for success.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Royal Treatment, March 2, 2003
By
I first heard Billy Joe Royal's "Down in the Boondocks" when my parents were playing LPs one nigh when I was about six. I was hooked from that moment. I have yet to hear a song from Royal that I haven't liked. He has an extremely unique voice that adds such a deep emotion to every song. I'm sure it has to do with his acute stage fright. He really *is* packing in the intense emotion!

This isone of a few CDs that I can put in and play start to finish and usually plat again. The only thing that could make it better is if the song, 'The Hard Times" was on it. Evidently, that was not a nig hit for Royal at any point. Too bad, as it is my all time favorite of his. I have a nasty habit of falling in love with obscure songs that rarely pop up anywhere. It's my curse, I suppose.
