Billy the Kid's Gun Justice, 1940 film
The movie begins with Billy shooting out of the window. Jeff and Fuzzy are in this cabin. Fuzzy digs them out of this trouble, and they escape. Billy defends a lone woman against two cowboys, then escorts her home. Jeff said this used to be his Uncle Jim's place. Did they hear of a Jim Blanchard? "He went away." [Does their house seem too well furnished?] The man that sold them the land did not include the water rights (an old trick). Billy and Jeff go to where the ware was diverted. There are shots and a fist fight. The settlers can dig a ditch for water now. Where is Jim Blanchard? Nobody knows. Lawyer Martin offers them good advice. Billy visits Allen and asks him to return the money to the settlers. There is a fight in the bar, six men pursue Billy and Jeff but lose them. Allen shows up with the sheriff to ask for reparations for the dam damage, or face legal action. Will a man tell where Billy and his friends are hiding? Billy has a plan and sends Fuzzy to the saloon with a map for buried gold. Allen's henchmen go to search Roberts' ranch and are caught. Jeff follows Baker to their stone cabin and hears about the disappeared men. Allen shows up at Roberts' ranch to offer a lot of money for an immediate sale of his ranch. Jeff releases the sheriff and tells him where the bodies are buried. Allen buys the ranch, Mr. Roberts and Ann quickly move away, then Billy leaves too. The bags of gold turn out to be duds! Allen and Baker race after Billy and Fuzzy. Jeff and the sheriff race after Allen and Baker, then take them to jail. Al "Fuzzy" St. John began in silent pictures with Roscoe Arbuckle and Buster Keaton. Like some other silent movie actors he switched to Westerns and often played comic characters. "Billy the Kid" acts as a hero in saving small ranchers from a crooked land dealer who killed to get his land. In other films "Billy the Kid" is a gunman and outlaw. Robert M. Utley wrote a biography about William Henry Bonney, and other histories about the late 19th century west. This echoes a story about Jesse James who paid off a widow's mortgage then robbed the banker who collected the payment. This same story was traced to the legendary Robin Hood. A good story gets repeated and adapted to current times.
