5.0 out of 5 stars Utterly hilarious Good Ol Boy gone bad!, March 11, 2000
By
This review is from: Billy Maki (Perfect Paperback)
Billy Maki is simply the funniest book I've ever read in my life!

Imagine Billy, a Good 'Ol Boy from the backwoods just trying to do his thing up in the rural upper penninsula of Michigan. (A 'Yooper' as they're called.) Problem is, Billy just can't run his life right. Doesn't make good choices sometimes. And this time, well, he's just plain gone over the deep end.

Billy Maki is the story of an exceptionally bad week of Billy's crazy life: He's living in his hunting shack cuz his wife's thrown him out of the house. He's got a ton of poached deer he's gotta do *something* with, cuz the neighbors wife says 'Get it out of our freezer!' He's not just wanted by the law; the town cop's got it in for Billy. IF he could hold down a job, maybe he'd have one and get a little _stability_ in his life.

But you see, STABILITY is the problem. Billy's been going to therapy, his wife made him do it, trying to fix his stupid life a little bit. And the Doc's got him on Prozac to kinda smooth out the bumps. But dang! Prozac and six-pack of beer just don't get along well, you know what I'm saying?

The trials and tribulations of Billy just trying to get through a day of life is funny enough, but what make's this book so hysterical is how it's told! The first two chapters are Billy's version of the story... Then subsequent chapters from his wife, Diane, then the town constable, Billy's father, Billy's best friends -- All telling _their_ version of the story; "What the hell happened to Billy's mind last week?" makes this book an absolute hoot!

This re-telling of a very simple story from all the people whom Billy's life affects in these few days is a brilliant writing approach! (Remember, Billy's full of Prozac and beer - and there's two sides to every story... and you better get a second opinion to find out the truth!)

This book is very regional to the northwoods. I live a hundred miles from where it takes place, and it's dead on accurate about life up in these parts! But the story and its humor are UNIVERSAL. For city-folk, Billy could just as easily be _YOUR_ neighbor, living in that run-down trailer-park in your otherwise very nice suburban neighborhood.

BUY THIS BOOK. And joyfully, hysterically let your self get drug into the silly world of Billy Maki.
