5.0 out of 5 stars A Fun, Delightful, Bright, Cheery & Educational Kids Book, June 11, 2009
This review is from: Billy and Milly, Short and Silly! (Hardcover)
Such a great book for young readers! I could read it over and over again -- with the fun rhymes and short stories, kids will stay entertained -- and once they learn it, they can say the words as they come up. Teaches rhyming and language in a fun and enjoyable way. Beautiful and vibrant pictures too.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful book to encourage your preschooler or emergent reader to guess the next word!, October 2, 2009
This review is from: Billy and Milly, Short and Silly! (Hardcover)
Billy and Milly are sitting in the doorways of their apartments on the stairs. Billy is holding a basketball and Milly is sitting there looking a little dreamy. The ice cream truck is coming down the street and they won't be sitting there for long. "Stoops Hoops Scoops Oops." The basketball just plopped right on top of Milly's ice cream cone. Looks like that double dipper cone is all one flavor now!

Billy put his golf ball on a tee and gave it his best swing, but something disastrous happened. "Tee Tree Bee Flee." That ball just hit the side of a bee's nest that was hanging in a tree. All the bees got very angry and started to chase Billy. BZZZZZZ! It was time to throw that club in the air and run for it!

This is a wonderful book to encourage your preschooler or emergent reader to guess the next word. This is a rhythmical book that is very lively with "thirteen very funny and very short stories." The graphic novel style characters who look a tad anime are very appealing. The only word that will be difficult for most emergent readers to decipher would be the word "gnat." Before you know it, you're going to have a youngster who will insist on "reading" you this entire book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Read for Young Readers!, November 8, 2011
This review is from: Billy and Milly, Short and Silly! (Hardcover)
What a wonderful book for young children and those learning rhyming words. Told only in rhyming words, this book tells the adventures of Billy and Milly. With one word per page, the reader has to use the colorful illustrations to piece together the story. Young kids will have fun guessing the next rhyming word to complete the story.

I used this book with my kindergarten kids in the library, and they loved guessing the next word and then coming up with more rhyming words.

This review is from: Billy and Milly, Short and Silly! (Hardcover)
I used this book last week with my first and second grade students as an introduction to story elements. I explained to them that to be a story there needs to be at least three things: characters, setting, and plot. The short stories in this book worked perfectly to emphasize my point that a story doesn't need to have 100 pages to be a story. By the time I got to the last story, the students were reading the words with me (a clear sign of engagement). Whenever a book captures the attention of my often restless first and second graders, I am always relieved. Not every book is a success after all. But this is a book that I will definitely use again. Maybe next time I'll work with the students and see if we can come up with short stories of our own.

One of things that makes this book work so well is the way the illustrations and the words compliment each other perfectly. Since each story is only three or four words, the illustrations become a vital part of helping the students see the story. Mourning's illustrations do this perfectly. I also appreciated the organization of some of the stories, where the story starts on one double page spread, but finished on the next page. This allowed me to ask the students where they thought the story was going (prediction), another important skill for young readers to develop. The design of the book (short stories, few words) makes this a great book for struggling readers as well. Highly recommended for teachers to use with their students or for private reading time.

5.0 out of 5 stars great for early readers, February 11, 2010

This review is from: Billy and Milly, Short and Silly! (Hardcover)
This is a little like the BOB books in that it repeats a rhyming (sound) sequence over and over, but the pictures and the stories are FABULOUS. Highly recommend.
