Down 'n' Dirty Rock 'n' Roll,
By J. Barbee (Los Angeles, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Birtha / Can't Stop the Madness (Audio CD)
Birtha was one of the select few all-female bands (along with LA's Fanny and Deadly Nightshade) to emerge in the early 1970's rock scene. While the other two bands certainly boast some high points in their repertoire, it is clear from this two-album compilation, that Birtha was more than strong from top to bottom. With not one, but three talented vocalists trading off on the lead mic, and dirty, bluesy guitars grinding with stunning precision behind, one listen will make you wonder why the hell this group isn't better remembered. Somewhere between the divine caterwalling of Heart, and a truck-stop house band's earthy grit, Birtha lies in wait to convert you to their wily whims. Those afraid of women who rock need not bother. But, even better, if you can find either of these original albums on vinyl, pick them up -- your turntable will thank you. Though the CD sounds great, it somehow seems to take away from the feeling that you've unearthed a true treasure.

HARD ROCKING FEMALE BAND,
By A Customer
This review is from: Birtha / Can't Stop the Madness (Audio CD)
Birtha was one of the first all female rock bands along with Fanny during the seventies. They were a little more hard rocking than Fanny and had sometimes a blusier sound. This cd contains the two albums they released during their short career. One member, Rosemary Butler went on to become the backup singer of Jackson Browne. I would definitely reccomend this cd to anyone who enjoys seventies rock, if just to hear that women can definitely play rock as well as the male groups of that era.

Two Early Retro-Rock Classics,
By A Customer
This review is from: Billy Swan / Four (Audio CD)
This two-for (Billy Swan and Four) is fantastic. What a talent Swan had for interpreting material. The musicians sound like they're having a lot of fun recapturing the magic of early rock'n'roll through more contemporary sensibilities.
