5.0 out of 5 stars Binary: Tom Shear's Excellence Comes to the fore again..., September 7, 2007
By
This review is from: Binary (Audio CD)
Tom Shear the face and sound behind Assemblage 23 is a pioneer of the synth-industrial genre and each new release reveals that his grip and grasp is getting tighter and more perfect with each passing release. In this current EP "Binary", Tom Shear has orchestrated a sheer work of art. Not only does the album cover give a testament of an artist at work but the 2 remixes of the song 'Binary' are fantastic. I especially enjoyed the inclusion of the Nerve Filter Dub which is Tom's side project that in itself bears monumental merit. I absolutely love the album version of Binary but the club mix of Binary comes close to eclipsing if not over-taking the album version.

As with most EP's that artists have released, this particular release see's the previously unreleased demos of 'Dirt' and 'Fluorescent Skies' released for die hard wanton Assemblage 23 fans. I quite enjoyed 'Dirt' that had a dance friendly beat but 'Fluorescent Skies' was the stand-out for me, it was Tom Shear at his experimental best.

Binary was released near the same time as the full length album 'Meta' and well done to Tom Shear. Each passing album is better than the last - and the fact remains that Tom Shear is on his way to becoming a legend in the synth fusion scene. His mix of dance friendly music with cutting edge lyrics fuse together to create masterpiece after masterpiece

Assemblage 23 has been doing this music gig and doing it well for a while now. tom Shear is a genius when it comes to hearing patterns in the music, too, knowing just where to take something that has been written and place it with instruments. He has helped a lot of bands - Lost Signal immediately springs to mind - and he has done this by evoking raw emotion, writing about issues, or just powering up the dance floor. Binary does that, too, making me happy that I picked it up. it has the power of remixes, good remixes, not to mention two songs that hit hard and well.

Dirt and F. Skies are two of the songs that stick in my mind when i'm writing this. Dirt especially so, because it reminds me of just how good some of these B-Sides really are. While some bands pander and try to give you little trinkets to listen to, A-23 give you something to truly write home - or reviews - about.
Binary msade me a happy camper and i don't even like the woods.

Fan or not, check this puppy out and see if you like it. It will make you happy that you brought it home - even those who fear EPs like I would fear an actual animal coming into my house for the firs time will love it. you can go the eay way and take the songs you don't have, but the flow of this is well worth picking it. Shear put his stamp on it and, personally, i thinkt hat is enough to say "you should buy me now."
