Book Description

3 and upP and upMiss Bindergarten Books
Miss Bindergarten, that beguiling teacher with a tail who made getting ready for the first day of kindergarten so much fun, returns for another milestone. Tomorrow she and her students will have been together for 100 days. To celebrate, each student must bring 100 of some wonderful, one-hundred-full thing! Popsicle sticks, paper-chain links, stickers, a drawing, a design, a string of beads--that night the students get busy finishing up their projects. Meanwhile, Miss Bindergarten gets ready, too, buying ingredients for 100-day punch (made with 100 cherries), folding paper hats (that mark off 100 days on their brim), and piling up blocks to make the number 100. The clever text moves briskly in rhyme (with alphabetical order tucked in); the celebration is joyous; counting and early math concepts abound; and everyone's one-hundred-full efforts are recapped in a notebook Miss Bindergarten puts together on the last pages. Children will surely revel in the pictures, which are filled with the love that Miss Bindergarten pours into her classroom and students, and the pride and pleasure that they take in their own work and in one another. This is a book that will both satisfy and motivate on many levels.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

From Joseph Slate and illustrator Ashley Wolff, creators of the popular Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten, comes this lively celebration of the 100th day of kindergarten. In honor of this festive milestone, each student must bring "100 of some wonderful, one-hundred-full thing!" to school the following day. That night, we see Adam the alligator making a fort of 100 Popsicle sticks, Brenda the beaver falling asleep over her paper chain of 100 colorful loops, and Christopher the cat lamenting his toppling 100 blocks. Meanwhile, Miss Bindergarten does 100 sit-ups before making 100-day punch (with 100 ice cubes and 100 cherries), painstakingly decorates her classroom, and concocts miscellaneous math-oriented activities. Just before class, "Jessie pokes her polka dots. / Kiki carries tarts. / Lenny hugs a bagful of a hundred candy hearts." The rhyming text bounces through the celebratory preparations of the whole kindergarten class--from Adam the alligator to Zachary the zebra--until the whole class reunites for a party that's perhaps a hundred times more fun than they imagined! Kids will enjoy examining and reexamining the humorous pictures of the animal students battling with various crafts, and they'll adore the loving and purposeful Miss Bindergarten--a Border collie with a heart of gold... and 100 bows on her dress. (Ages 4 and older) --Karin Snelson

From Publishers Weekly

In this exuberant follow-up to Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten, the border-collie teacher kicks off a celebration of the 100th day of class by asking her students to bring in "100 of some wonderful, one-hundred-full thing!" The results, reported in alphabetical order of the student's name and species, brim with the humor of children giving their ingenuity full rein. Brenda the beaver almost dozes off while gluing a 100-link paper chain, and Ian the iguana proudly escorts "a relative who's lived a hundred years." As readers of the previous book will anticipate, Miss Bindergarten works every bit as hard as her students: she pins 100 bows to her dress, makes a paper snake with 100 colorful scales and puts together a roomful of related activities. Once again, Wolff's sturdy, genially observed illustrations prove a perfect match for Slate's rhyming text, and together they build momentum to the big event?a party that's certain to inspire similar festivities in kindergartens everywhere. Ages 3-6.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific for the classroom!, November 11, 1998

This review is from: Miss Bindergarten Celebrates the 100TH Day of Kindergarten (Miss Bindergarten Books) (Hardcover)
Thank you again, Joseph Slate and Ashley Wolff!!! From a teacher's perspective, Miss Bindergarten Celebrates the 100th Day of Kindergarten is a wonderful follow-up to Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten. Slate's rhythmic, repetitive language make for a perfect read-aloud that children can participate in. Wolff's detailed illustrations reveal much time spent in REAL classrooms. Children will love seeing the similarities between their own classrooms and the beloved Miss B's. I'll certainly be reading this to my own Kindergarteners on our 100th Day celebration, and I encourage other teachers to do so as well!

The 100th day celebration for Miss Bindergarten's kindergarten class is just what you'd hope such a celebration to be...whimsical, thoughtful and joyous. This book is exemplary.
