Book Description

8 and up3 and upBindi Babes
Meet Amber, Jazz, and Geena Dhillon—a.k.a. the Bindi Babes. They’re three fabulous sisters with a reputation for being the coolest, best-dressed girls at their school. But their classmates don’t know that the Dhillon sisters work extra hard to look perfect and together to all of their friends . . . while privately trying not to think how much they miss their mom, who died a year ago. What these struggling sisters certainly don’t need is an interfering auntie from India inviting herself into their household to cramp their style. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what their dad allows to happen.

Soon the sisters’ pushover dad is saying no to designer clothes and expensive sneakers, and Auntie is butting into every area of their lives. What are the Bindi babes to do? There’s only one way to be rid of Auntie: marry her off to some unsuspecting guy. Will Amber, Jazz, and Geena find a man who can put up with Auntie before she completely ruins their lives? Or are Auntie’s new rules doomed to make the fabulous Dhillon sisters just . . . average?

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-7–Amber (10), Jazz (11), and Geena (13), three Indian sisters, live with their father in England. On the surface, they are perfect students who dress in perfect clothes and get along perfectly with each other. In reality, the girls are missing one big element in their lives, their mom. Ever since her death the year before, their father has indulged his daughters' every material wish, but is rarely at home. That suddenly changes when he invites his sister from India to live with them. The girls immediately plot how to get rid of her, including a plan to marry her off. Auntie is a delightful character who consistently manages to turn their plans around with hilarious results. The story has a nice blend of traditional culture, including a cousin's big fat Indian wedding and more modern discussions of boys and school. With solid writing and a sense of humor, Dhami weaves a tale of three material girls who discover the priceless value of family, friends, and neighbors. They also learn the importance of grieving for their mother and of not having to be perfect.–Linda L. Plevak, Saint Mary's Hall, San Antonio, TX

From Booklist

Gr. 5-8. A year after their mother's sudden death, 14-year-old Geena, 12-year-old Ambajit (Amber), and 11-year-old Jazvinder (Jazz), aka the Bindi Babes, may be perfectly behaved and rule at school and at home (in England), but they still haven't dealt with the loss of their mom. Then Auntie arrives from India and tries to interfere with their carefully constructed routines and coping mechanisms. In an effort to be rid of her, the sisters decide to find her a husband. If they can just get her to their school, they'll orchestrate a meeting with Amber's gorgeous teacher, Mr. Arora. But are these "perfect" girls able to unbend enough to misbehave? Indian words describing food, clothing, and familial relationships add cultural flavor to the story, but girls from everywhere will relate to the main characters. Although there is some sense of the girls' grieving process, the overall tone of the story is light and innocent as the girls come to realize that being perfect is no substitute for dealing with a life-altering event. A sequel, Bollywood Babes, is planned for March 2005. Cindy Welch

3.0 out of 5 stars Bindi Babes Review, May 15, 2005
This review is from: Bindi Babes (Hardcover)
Amber, Jazz, and geena Dhillon are three sisters who get whatever they want when they want it. Their dad buys them anything they want. They all have the best clothes, shoes, accessories all of the other girls in their school envy them, and all their teachers love them, they are certainly teachers pets. But that all changes when their aunt from India comes and lives with them to help their single dad. The girls aunt steps in and "ruins" their lives. She doen't let the girls dress like they would usually dress, she doesn't let their dad buy them shoes even though they have fifty pairs, and she makes weird food...So they try to get their auntie to marry. Does it work? Well you are going to have to read the book to find out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Irresistible!, March 12, 2008

If you like books that are smart, sassy, and have dialogue so real (and so funny) that you swear the author is hiding behind a bush transcribing the conversations of teenage girls, you will like this series. I am an adult, and laughed out loud many times... There is a good heart under all the mayhem. This is one book my daughter found in the library, but it was taken over by me (later by her too!). The series has an element of sophistication that I believe would be appreciated by readers of all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bindi Babes, April 18, 2007
This review is from: Bindi Babes (Paperback)
In the cleverly written chapter book, you will learn of an interesting culture (the Indian culture) while reading a great book with a good plot. In BINDI BABES, sisters Geena, Amber and Jazz are still in shock from the death of their mother when their Auntie comes to help out around the house. Geena, Amber and Jazz are used to being spoiled to the core, but when their Auntie came around, everything changed. Auntie wouldn't let their father buy them anything they wanted aswell as many other things the sisters were not used to. To get their life back to normal, Geena, Amber and Jazz decide that marrying Auntie off would be best...
