5.0 out of 5 stars A Revered Yuletide Favorite January 6, 2014
I recall on this cold Twelfth Night that years ago, as a child back in the '70s when Bing Crosby was still alive, I not only watched his Christmas specials with my family, but listened to my family's vinyl copy of this album.I remembered the much-livelier second side better than the first, and only began to appreciate the recordings of the first side as I got older.
Amid the pops and pings the recordings have developed with age, we enjoy the beauteous and spirited results of the frequent collaborations of the legendary singer with Jud Conlon's Rhythmaires, the John Scott Trotter Orchestra, Max Terr's Mixed Orchestra, Carole Richards, Vic Schoen's Orchestra, and Schoen's frequent collaborators, the Andrews Sisters.
We first hear Bing's sober "Silent Night", followed by the more cheerful "Adeste Fideles", then Bing's signature tune, "White Christmas", then "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" the stately and resolute, "Faith of Our Fathers", and the World War II era staple, "I'll Be Home for Christmas".
Side 2 features a lively Swing Era "Jingle Bells", featuring the vocal stylings of Patti, Maxene and LaVerne Andrews, who also join Bing on "Santa Claus is Coming to Town". Carole Richards accompanies Bing on "Silver Bells" ( introduced in the 1951 film, "The Lemon Drop Kid", featuring Bing's close partner, Bob Hope), then "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas", followed by my childhood favorite, the spry and bouncy(characteristics of myself at that young age), "Christmas in Killarney" which honor's Bing's Irish roots, and the closing carol, "Mele Kalikimaka", which was of more than a little relevance to me during my years of "green and bright" Christmases in Hawaii.
