Product Description

Why would spry senior Bob Weiderley suddenly fall into a coma after winning a game of Bingo? After all, he was the most physically fit of all the men at the Happy Haven Assisted Living Facility—able to bend over to tie his own shoes and use the stairs rather than the elevator. It was just very suspicious. That’s why Essie Cobb and her friends and fellow residents--Opal, Marjorie, and Fay--decided to investigate.

Was it possible that someone was out to get the friendly old gentleman? Maybe it was Violet, Happy Haven’s manager, trying to cover up her shady past. Or Sue, the activities director, whose behavior was strange to say the least. Maybe it was one of the three women who sat at Bob’s regular table in the dining room. Or the mysterious man who had recently sent Bob a startling letter. Essie Cobb is determined to find out—and she’s not going to let her age (90), her weak bladder, or her various infirmities hold her back.

Welcome to Happy Haven. If you thought most elderly residents of assisted living facilities spent their days sitting in the sun watching television, you haven’t met senior sleuth Essie Cobb and her three detecting buddies. These four elderly ladies have curiosity and drive unusual for women in their 80’s and 90’s. They may not be able to get around as fast as youngsters in their 60’s, or navigate the Interstate or Interweb (or whatever that computer thing is called), but they can solve a mystery. And they’re starting with this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute Mystery!, October 23, 2011
This review is from: Bingoed (Essie Cobb Senior Sleuth Mystery) (Kindle Edition)
The Happy Haven Assisted Living Facility is really hopping when one of their residents, Bob Weiderley, wins at Bingo. A whole dollar bill is his, but when he goes up to collect his winnings, he passes out and winds up in a coma. His fellow residents are stunned. Bob has been in such good shape, even though he is nearly 90.

90-year-old Essie Cobb isn't buying that the excitement got to Bob. There has to be more to the story than that and she intends to find out. Along with her good friends Opal, Marjorie and Fay, they investigate the situation and find much to be suspicious of and a surprising amount of suspects.

For one thing, just before Bob fell into a coma, a stranger sent him a letter with incredibly shocking news. There's, also, the director of the Happy Haven, as well as the social director, both of whom are acting strangely. Essie's suspicions even stretch out to the women Bob eats dinner with on a regular basis. She's determined to get to the bottom of this and find out who wants Bob dead and put an immediate stop to any more plots to kill the man.

Bingoed is a humorous book filled with both mystery and laughter - not to mention a number of endearing characters that will warm your heart. It's a fast-paced, quick read that will surely lighten your mood. This is the first, and hopefully not the last, in the Essie Cobb Senior Sleuth Mystery series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Cozy Mystery, October 24, 2011

I had the pleasure of reading `Bingoed' by Patricia Rockwell, a novel about a 90 year old super sleuth named Essie Cobb. Essie and her "partners in crime" suspect that foul play is involved when one of their fellow residents at Happy Haven Assisted Living Facility collapses and falls into a coma after winning at Bingo. The theories run rampant when spry Essie and her friends put their mind to solving this mystery.

Mrs. Rockwell hit a homerun with `Bingoed'. The storyline will keep you coming back for more. This is definitely a mystery read that you don't want to miss. Curl up with a cozy blanket for this cozy read.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good "whodunit" mystery. People of all ages will enjoy this book. I appreciate Mrs. Rockwell's mysteries, because they are not too graphic or intimidating. Anyone who shies away from a mystery due to gripping content will appreciate this book. I think my grandmother would get a kick out of `Bingoed' and enjoy it as much as I did.

Patricia Rockwell is a quick rising author, whose writing will captivate you. I look forward to reading more from her in the future. Don't miss out on the adventures that Essie Cobb and her quick witted friends "wheel" themselves into. This page turner will make you laugh out loud, as well as keep you guessing and waiting to see what will come next. I'm anticipating reading more about Essie's adventures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jessica fletcher and Miss Marple watch out for Essie Cobb., October 14, 2011

Despite her advanced age and physical infirmities, Essie Cobb gets to the bottom of things in her first mystery. Get ready and hang on to your walkers folks as she and her sleuthing table mates at Happy Haven solve the mysteries as to why Bob collapsed after Bingo and just what does the administrator have to hide?

The story is full of twists and turns and hilarity to find out what is going on. Essie is mentally spry and will stop at nothing to solve the case with out getting caught. The author Ms. Rockwell certainly catches the atmosphere of life in a retirement residence with sensitivity and and humor and paints great characters in Essie and her friends as well as the staff. I am looking forward to more in this series as well as her other novels. I loved the quotes at the beginning of each chapter about aging.
