I've had my Biobrite Sunrise Controller for about 10 days, and I can truly say that I love it. I'd been having a hard time waking in the morning because the sunrise has gotten later and later. My alarm clock would wake me but with it still being dark out, I would groggily hit Snooze and go back to sleep (multiple times!!), so I was getting up later and later each day putting me at risk of being late to work.

This is my first ever product of this type, so I cannot provide any comparison to similar items. I researched every available sunrise lamp that I could find, and I liked the features of this one the best and especially being able to use my existing bedside lamp.

For me, this product works great. And despite what the other "engineer" reviewer said, I thought the clock was simple to set up! You just have to press the program button to "scroll" through each different setting option, so you press it multiple times, and if you bypass something you needed to set you just keep pressing the button until you get back around to that item. It's not a big deal. I had the whole thing set up in just a few minutes. It was nice not to have to juggle trying to hold down an "alarm set" button and another button to change the hour/minutes - like all the other alarm clocks I've had.

Another reviewer disliked not having an on/off for the lamp, I don't find it to be a problem for me to just hold down the +button for a few seconds till the lamp reaches full brightness. The + and - buttons are different, the - is concave and the + is convex, so you can even feel the difference in the dark. I like being able to turn the lamp on to a very dim setting if I have to get up at night and need just a little bit of light that won't disturb my husband.

After a few weeks of ownership, I am returning this item.
The worst problem with it is the flickering of the light as it turns on, which makes waking even more jarring than simply turning on the light.

But in addition to this defect, the design flaws of the SunRise Controller are bad enough on their own that it's a completely undesirable at any price, and inexcusable at the exorbitant price it's being sold for.

But lest you think I'm just griping, I'll describe some of the better features first.
- Very pretty number display. All the digits are curvy and fun shapes, rather than the usual 8-segment
- Date display is nice
- Lots and lots of features. So many features...

That's about it. On the other hand:
- Very difficult to set up / operate. Absolutely requires the manual because it has so many features buried in a bizarre menu system
- Display brightness is shockingly horrid. It's either bright enough to literally light up my entire bedroom, or dark enough that in the day it's invisible, and at night it takes several moments to figure out what it says. The 'auto' brightness mode helps, but it's still a very, very poor design.
- The alarm must be RESET EVERY DAY. You read that right. Every night, before you go to bed, you have to walk up to this thing and press the 'alarm' button. If you don't, no alarm.
- 'Auto' brightness is tied to the alarm setting, so if you don't want the alarm going off tomorrow, you're stuck with a bright display unless you manually change the setting, which requires THIRTEEN BUTTON PRESSES. I counted.
- After the light comes on in the morning, it will shut off instantly 30 minutes after. Despite the dozens of useless features, there's no setting to have the light stay on or dim down.

This item is very unintuitive to program... the sequence of buttons to push in order to do something very basic, such as tell the alarm what time to go off in the morning, is complex and if you make one false move, your previous programming steps are automatically lost and you have to start over. I have an advanced degree in engineering, and am fairly competent with electronics and programming, and trying to figure out how to make this item run was almost too much for me, even following the instructions provided by the instruction manual. It doesn't help that the instruction manual refers to buttons that don't exist (it mentions a "+" and "-" button... they're not on the unit. Apparently, the flat rubber buttons on the dimming controls used to have raised "+" and "-" symbols that aren't there any longer.

Even if one does have the patience for figuring out how to program this thing, it has another fatal flaw: it makes buzzing, electrical noise when it turns on, and begins to feed power to the lamp that you plug in. I also have a "SunUp" sunrise simulator (no longer made, unfortunately), and the electronic buzzing noise made by the SunUp is barely audible by comparison to this thing. If you're buying a sunrise simulator, you want to be awakened by gentle increase in light intensity, not an annoying buzzing sound... right?

Last issue: this thing is pretty big. The photos in the item listing don't really convey how large it is. It's the size of, say, a large book (like, a full sized family Bible or something). The SunUp, by comparison, is about 1/5 the size and weight.

So, I'll be returning it, and trying another (cheaper) alternative.
