as an avid reader of game guides, i had high expectations for this one, and was not disappointed in the least.

this limited edition guide is beautiful. the cover art is exceptional. the introduction by ken levine was a welcome addition. i am always interested in what his take on anything is. the layout is concise and full of just the information you would hope.

the chapters are as follows:

welcome to columbia
detective training
guns of liberty
the height of columbia fashion
booker's campaign (140 pages out of the 272 pages are dedicated solely to the campaign)
enemies of the people
achievements & trophies

it was great that they listed the controls and variations of the difficulty settings on one page. it's nice to have as a quick reference, especially as you begin playing (though the game does a solid job of introducing you to the mechanics in efficient time). the guide also outlines the basics you will see throughout your journey (i.e.: power ups, weapons, gear, infusions).

the information on what elizabeth can do, as well as how the tears work, is helpful since these are new additions to the bioshock series.

the vigor section was one of my favorites. as someone who was a HUGE fan of plasmids in the original, i couldn't wait to read up on the various vigors and how they could be combined to best effect. the images are terrific, and the information is well fleshed out.

the section on randomized and guaranteed gear is excellent. there is also a supplemental section with example builds which could be helpful for someone who wants to try out different playstyles but isn't sure how to set them up.

the walkthrough itself is the best i've seen.

Table of Contents:

Detective Training - Basic tips like what key does what, what food items do, how to useSky Hook.

Guns of Liberty - Stats of all the weapons. Where upgrades are found. Notes on best situation to use, for example it tells you that shotgun damage decreases with distance.

Vigor - Rundown of all the Vigors aka Plasmids in the game. Tells you about the vigor combos too. I find the table with the vulnerabilities of each type of enemy to each Vigor to be really nice.

The Height of Columbia Fashion - Gear: hats and such that Booker finds throughout the game that can boost his stats. I especially like the lists of matching outfits - For example one outfit is called Sky-Line Ninja. Each outfit is meant to enhance a certain style of gameplay. Sky-Line Ninja, true to its name, enhances your attacks from the Sky-Lines.

Booker's Campaign - This is the walkthrough. It takes up about half the book.

Enemies of the People - types of enemies.

Achievements and Trophies.

About the keychain that comes with the limited edition guidebook. It is a metal key, about 4-5 inches long. It's nice but for me personally it's too big for me to use as a keychain. It's about the size of an old school car key (not one of those smaller keyless entry things) but heavier.

One pet peeve I would like to point out: Many parts of this book uses as many exclamation points as a 13-year-old girl texting! By that I mean literally every other paragraph ends with an exclamation point. That doesn't sound like much, but the paragraphs are only a couple sentences long! It does get distracting. Luckily the Walkthrough section is not plagued by this problem! Every other section is though!

The Introduction to the BioShock Infinite Limited Edition Strategy Guide makes a good point: that half of the fun in owning a strategy guide is having a beautiful art book. This limited edition does a nice job of that: a thick, well-bound hardcover with colorful pages and some great shots of the game. It also comes with a fun goodie: a fairly sturdy keychain that mimics a key from the game and has the symbols of a songbird and its cage (a minor story event in-game). As if that's not enough, Ken Levine and others are interviewed and their quotes woven into parts of the guide to help flesh out the vision behind Bioshock: Infinite.

What I like about this book beyond the art is that it walks you through each level in a fairly spoiler-free way. The first section gives you a general guide to how to play the game, such as explaining why you don't have to worry about Elizabeth's safety during a battle, and how she can help you out. From there, each chapter takes the events in sections, talking through the major things to look out for but the authors are careful in their wording so as not to spoil the main story.

Overall, this is not as in-depth as the Brady Guides to games like Skyrim and Fallout 3/New Vegas, but it is a more story-driven, artistic, and beautiful way to learn the game, walk through the story, and learn a lot. I enjoyed using this towards the end of each level to see if there was anything I missed so I could go back and experience it, or to compare notes between their strategy suggestions and how I ended up playing a scene.
