5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, October 15, 2008

This is a great book.
I had often wondered why I felt so nervous when I drank caffeine, and so sick when I drank orange juice. Also the popular diet of low-fat, high-fruits-and-veggies did not agree with me. In fact, it made me sicker than I have been my whole life and it took me a long time to figure out what it was: this book had not been written then. As the author points out, this popular diet is good for the majority of the population, but not all the population.
This book has me pegged. It told me a lot of things I already knew about myself, but I also learned much more, also it answered some big questions for me.
This book is for everyone. I highly recommend it.

This is the best of the metabolic typing books, highly recommended.

The basic idea is that if your blood is too alkaline or too acid, then you won't feel good and won't have maximum energy. The blood coming back to your heart should be at exactly 7.46, which is just slightly alkaline. If it is not, then your metabolism is not working at its best, and you can have symptoms ranging from fatigue, depression, fibromyalgia, etc to psychosis if the imbalance is severe.

Each of our metabolisms is unique, but we fall into three broad categories: too acid, too alkaline, or mixed. Each type of metabolism needs to eat food that helps it move back towards the optimum balance. Speculation is that these groups come from the original hunter-gatherers, from people who adapted to an agricultural diet, and people who are a mix of these two extremes. Hunter-gather types who tend to be too acidic need to eat a high-purine/higher-fat diet; agricultural types who tend to be too alkaline need to eat a low-purine diet, and those in the middle need to eat a mix of both, tending towards higher-purine foods.

Wiley describes how to easily determine which type you are without going to a doctor or nutritionist or spending a lot of money, and tells you how to change your nutrition to become more healthy and stay healthy on a long term basis.

If you read one other book, Dr George Watson's Nutrition and Your Mind is highly recommended. It provides a lot of the science behind metabolic typing, and helps explain why it works so well.
