5.0 out of 5 stars Best Protein Out There
This is the BEST protein that I have had so far. Before I go any further, this is the "best" in my opinion because I was looking for specific elements in my protein which were the following:

1. Natural Whey Protein with no other types of protein, such as soy. There's nothing wrong with soy, but i can just drink soy milk or eat tofu for that.
2. Cold...

1.0 out of 5 stars too sweet
Ordered this product when I ran out of my other brand. Definitely WAY TOO SWEET for me. I am on a no-sugar diet and this has 7 gm of sugar. I could hardly drink my smoothie as it was just too sweet.

2. Cold Filtered so that it's not denatured
3. No hormones or added ingredients. I want the ingredient list to be as short as possible and ALL NATURAL
4. LOW CALORIES and LOW FAT. I DO NOT want excess mass, contrary to probably 95% of the people out there who take supplements to just "get big"

If the above are things you do not want (especially number 4), then search out a different protein. Now, if you were looking for the above, I'll tell you why it's so great.

A. Taste. This has NO weird whey after taste. it keeps it to a very minimum. to be honest, i don't taste it at all. also since it uses no artificial flavors, you don't get that weird cheap candy after taste either.

B. Price. This price on amazon is excellent. it's way cheaper than anything you will find at your local health food store. it almost alway sells for a little over 40 dollars.

C. Results. Ok, this is of course going to be different from person to person because it depends on a lot on how you train, your lifestyle/regular eating habits, etc., but i like it because it hasn't added any fat, and has helped me supplement by diet with that extra bit of protein. and it definitely has helped me gain muscle and strength. I've used this product steadily for about 4 to 5 years now.

UPDATE: Feb. 12, 2012
I just wanted to add one more point after receiving a friendly response to my review. I've read some negative reviews on this product regarding its mixability. Normally this product mixes incredibly well, i.e. just dissolves into the water/milk instantly. HOWEVER, I have had two separate instances in my 6+ years of using this product when the protein just wouldn't mix well. I noticed that the powder color was slightly darker brown than normal too. But, seeing that it only happened twice in my 6+ years of using this product and no such cases in the past 3 years, I am inclined to say these were one off instances, and may very well qualify for an exchange.

P.S. I'm still using this product regularly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bare bones whey packs muscle on your bare bones, December 9, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased this whey protein with two main motives: First, to add quick protein into my diet to stave off hypoglycemic crashes. Second, to pack on muscle as I've begun lifting weights in earnest.

My first motivation seems to have been met. After drinking some of this whey protein I feel a bit more alert and seem to be able to handle sweets better. I'm still unsure if it's a placebo effect however.

My second motivation also seems to have been met. Since consistently drinking one serving a day (usually during a workout) I have noticed steady muscle growth at a rate that is higher than before I was taking in more fast uptake proteins like this whey. Of course, I take in good muscle-growing proteins in other forms as well, but this whey protein is an essential part of my muscle-building protein diet.

Usage Tips:
1) This stuff does not mix well with a spoon. It takes a heavyweight beating to get it to mix and even then there are clumps stuck to the spoon and side of the glass. Try putting it in a blender or using an emulsifier.

2) This natural flavor whey doesn't taste bad, but doesn't taste good either. I put it in milk which makes it palatable, but still a little "funny" tasting. I usually just chug it down to get it over with when I'm drinking it plain.

3) Keeping 1 and 2 in mind, I recommend mixing a serving of this whey with a serving of some other powdered drink. In my case, I use malt flavored ovaltine. Put the two powders together in a glass and then thoroughly mix them before pouring in your liquid (milk is my favorite). It keeps the whey from clumping and also gives it a great taste. The whey flavor, which by itself is a bit unpleasant, actually enhances the flavor of the malt ovaltine and vice-versa. However, chocolate ovaltine is not such a good combo, in my opinion.

One more thing of note: the calories are as rock bottom as science allows. By nature one gram of protein has 4 calories and one serving of this whey protein is 20 grams of protein with 80 calories. Do the math... that's as lean as you can get.

All in all, this is a great product and you can't beat the price for the amount you get.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent protein powder with natural ingredients, January 9, 2009
Protein powders are not equal. You want to get isolate, not concentrate. And you should get a product with natural ingredients. You don't want fructose or anything similar.

The formula now has stevia as the sweetener. The flavor is wonderful and the shake filling. This is an exceptional product and the price reasonable. Avoid the products with the same name that have fructose and other ingredients.

This is similar to energyfirst pro-energy, which is an excellent top-of-the-line but way overpriced product.

This product is easy on the stomach, dissolves instantly and is a wonderful whey product.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Weight gain, or weight loss, what is your goal?, January 8, 2008
By
With all the different types of whey products available, why should you try this one? If you are trying (as most people are) to lose weight, I believe this particular product is a better choice than ordinary whey protein powders. But wait, it says right on the can, "Do not use for weight reduction." Yes and no. They don't want you replacing a meal with this powder.

But how would I lose weight then, you might ask? Because this product encourages anabolic response in muscle tissue. In other words, it builds muscle. The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn while you are at rest, even while you are asleep. It won't build muscle by itself. Only you can do that through exercise such as treadmill or lifting weights.

What is the other big feature making this product worth the money? It's ALIVE! Well, sort of. The first clue is right on the label: "99 percent Un-denatured." Uh, what's the difference? This:

Cheaper whey products are handled kind of rough in the manufacturing. As a result of exposure to heat for instance, many of the excellent "branched chain" proteins are broken up, destroyed. You are not getting the benefits of feeding your muscles with the highly bioactive fractions glycomacropeptide and beta-lactoglobulin, immunoglobulin, glycopeptides and lactoferrin.

Not only is this product manufactured with care, but you have to take care when you drink it. Do not use a blender, and do not heat it (like for hot coco). It mixes just fine in cold water or skim milk. Stir it with a fork, not a blender. This way you can be sure that you are getting all the nutrient you paid for. There is an added benefit to stirring it with a fork as opposed to using a blender. There are fructose crystals mixed in with the whey to give it some sweetness. Stir slowly and let the mixture sit for five minutes and the crystals sink to the bottom of the glass so you don't have to consume them if you don't want to. I don't want to. If there is only one thing I don't like about this product it is the added fructose. It's still a sugar I don't want or need, even if it does have the lowest glycemic index of any of the sugars. Sugar in any form is totally unnecessary to your body's wellbeing. If you don't eat sugar in any form, eventually you will lose your craving for it.

Finally, I'm not a dietitian. You should only use this food in conjunction with a healthy weight loss plan. Remember, too much protein in your diet can be just as harmful as too little. And remember, it won't do much for you if you do not exercise.

4.0 out of 5 stars Vanilla is too sweet and Natural is Just Right Vanilla, November 4, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Biochem 100% Whey Protein, Vanilla, 29.9 Ounce (Health and Beauty)
I first purchased Biochem lo carb NATURAL flavor. I had to go to the ingredients when I purchased that one and saw that it had french vanilla flavoring. Exactly what I wanted and unsweetened. Awesome flavor and texture. Loved it and wanted to get a larger container to last longer, was using it everyday. So I purchased this 30 oz Biochem VANILLA Flavor Whey Protein powder. Same color of container. I did look at the ingredients again but overlooked that the VANILLA flavor is sweetened with stevia and it is really sweet. If you are looking for a sweet health shake then this is the one for you. I like no sweetener and if it needs sweetening I add that myself. I love that Biochem at least does have the variety to choose from so that I can get the unsweetened next time. But wish it were less confusing. If I had bought the lo carb natural flavor on this site I'd give it ten stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars *No* Sugar or sweeteners!!!, April 28, 2011
It amazes me how so many people seem to be deliberately writing misinformed reviews about this particular product, saying it's "too sweet - which is impossible as there's no sweeteners of any kind in the "Natural" flavour - you'd almost think there was some kind of Mercola-led conspiracy going on!

The reality is *IF* you'e looking, as I was, for a whey protein isolate from non-hormone treated cows that tastes delicious, is micro-filtered keeping the good stuff intact [i.e. 99% undenatured etc] this is the one for you. And no, there's no acid used in the processing.

I repeat - The *NATURAL* flavour, which I buy, is sweetener-free.

The bonus/good news is this "natural" flavour has vanilla in it so it tastes delicious, yet you can sweeten it yourself to your liking.

And that's the other thing - you open the can and does it smell delicious? YES.

I've been using it for years, almost everyday, the price is reasonable, and the company reputable.

Do your research and you'll find as I did this is the best micro-filtered protein isolate on the market by a long shot.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dissolves and mixes well, January 7, 2005
I've only used a few different protein powders over the years but dissolving and mixing in well seems to be a problem with most. This powder dissolves very well if stirred in kind of vigorously and any big lumps crushed with a spoon then left to sit a few minutes and stirred again well. I don't recall any protein powder dissolving so easily.

The Natural has a pleasant mild vanilla flavor. I don't think it has any sweetner but the vanilla gives it a little sweetness. It tastes good in milk and I've been told it's not bad in orange juice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Whey, and little else., August 14, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
It's so hard to find pure high-quality whey, with no extras. This product is very close, but they have added a little bit of sugar in there, adding up to about 50 calories per scoop. Still, it has a lot less crap in it than any other protein powder that I've found.

5.0 out of 5 stars Our Favorite, June 15, 2005
By
hawkeyestc (Saint Cloud, MN USA) - See all my reviews
We have tried several protein powders and like the flavor, mixability, appetizing smell, and content of this product. It is slightly less sweet than Jay Robb's Vanilla Whey Protein. The absolute worst product in this category is the chalky MLO Super High Protein-yuk!

Here's a recipe for our late night snack:

Slumber Shake Serves 2

8 oz Silk Vanilla Soymilk

2 scoops Ultimate Lo carb Protein Powder

8 oz Gaymont yogurt (peach/cherry/strawberry/raspberry/blueberry)

1 cup frozen fruit (matching above peach or berry flavor)

Blend until smooth and sip it through a straw!

This is consistent with the Zone diet balancing protein, carbs, and fat.
