A very thorough intro to biochemistry for any grad student,
By A Customer
This review is from: Biochemistry: An Introduction (Hardcover)
From the point of view of biology and chemistry, this book outlines the fundamental points that are needed to understand the different processes of all cells, with a special emphasis on diseases. It has at the beginning of each chapter a short presentation of the problem to be discussed. It has an excellent set of questions at the end of each chapter. The index is very thorough and helpful and the references relate to CURRENT useful sources.

Full of errors,
By Sam "Pre-Med Student" (Laramie, WY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Biochemistry: The Molecular Basis of Life (Hardcover)
I found that this book has great content and purpose and is especially useful when accompanied with the study guide. However, the book is full of errors in the questions ranging from typos such as saying "Ribose-5-phosphate" instead of "Ribulose-5-phospate" to errors such as using the wrong term. For example in chapter 9, question 10, the question refers to a molecule to the right as "riboflavin" when it turn, it is actually "flavin mononucleotide." These errors can be very costly if a student is still learning biochemistry and hasn't mastered the concepts yet.Overall, the content of the chapters seems to be great and full of useful information with minimal errors. The questions at the end of the chapter and the answers in the study guide are where most of the errors occur. I also found that some of the answers to the questions either did not answer the question directly or spent a lot of time explaining extra concepts outside the scope of the question that were not needed and only confuse you more. The textbook does do a good job of teaching basic, fundamental knowledge. You just have to really know your concepts to get through the questions and catch the errors. The diagrams are pretty simplistic as well, and present the concepts well. Thanks to the content of the chapters and easy to read diagrams, this book survives with three stars.

This is NOT an easy course, but the information in this book is fantastic. Its presented in such a way that makes it easy to absorb and really understand. I highly recommend all Biochemistry students required to have the book, should absolutely utilize it. Don't forget the solutions manual/study guide!

I am taking biochemistry again as a graduate student, so this is not the first time I have to deal with biochemistry and its books, resembles one of my worst nightmares, I have to tell you, that this book cover most of general biochemistry that you have to know like many other books, but with one difference " you can actually understand what you are reading", it has a much simpler and clear aproach than other books, this defenatily a book for a student, specially undergraduate. It has a good organization, everything fact is illustrated with an example, which really helps you to understand better a concept, and in each page you have key words, which is always a good reminder, a summary of important concepts in the end of each chapter, which really helps you review after reading and for the exams, and also the questions review in the end of each chapter they are excellent, working with each concept from the basics and moving to more challenge questions, there is also a web site, I just found out last night, where you can see the molecules and reactions in 3D and taque quizes(excellent). I also purchased the study guide which I didnt get yet, but judgging by this book I dought it is not going to be worth it. Now don't get the wrong idea, biochemistry is a complex subject, you will need to study and dedicate, and this book is a tool for and will make much easier for you it did for me. Thanks for the authors, finally somebody made a book focus in learning and teaching not just for biochemists that already know a hell of biochemistry..Thank you soo much..

Biochemistry:The Molecular Basis of Life,

This review is from: Biochemistry: The Molecular Basis of Life (Hardcover)
This is a good biochemistry text book. I am really disappointed by the response of the sales representative and the response from the sales offices in New Delhi and Bombay. I bought this book understanding that I will also have the acess to the online resources of this book which will enable me to prepare power point presentation. But inspite of sending repeated emails and telephonic calls I havent been provided by the username and password to be access the inline resources. This reflects the indifferent attitude of the concerned staff of Oxford University Press which discourages from buying any of their products in future.
