great product, July 19, 2007
This review is from: Jaya Biodegradable Knife/Fork/Spoon Combo Pack, 250-Count Case (Health and Beauty)
I first tried this biodegradable cutlery when I was in the Whole Foods market eating area. I liked them so much, that I asked the deli workers if they knew who made this product-- but nobody seemed to know. I am glad I found them online, and on Amazon, my favorite online store. Before purchasing this, I wasn't clear if 250 count meant 250 total or 250 sets of forks, spoons, knives. After receiving the shipment, I am glad to tell you that it is 250 SETS of cutlery-- so 750 pieces total. Each set is wrapped individually, in a plastic-looking wrap. I'm not sure if the wrap itself is plastic (as that would defeat the point of biodegradable cutlery), but I think I remember reading somewhere that the wrap is also biodegradable. I will update this review if I find out differently. Also, I checked elsewhere online and found that the cutlery is made of potato starch. (No, it won't spoil.) It is heatsafe to 170 degrees Fahrenheit (not 200, as listed). I have used the cutlery for eating hot soup, and didn't have a problem with it. I have read that in very hot items, the cutlery can get soft, but won't melt into the food (although it wouldn't be toxic anyway). But after it is taken out of heat, it will harden again.
I am really happy with this product, and find them a great alternative to plasticware. Since I'm just a run-of-the-mill consumer, I don't know if this product will just biodegrade in the garbage. I know it's supposed to be compostable (so you can compost it if you have a composter or a backyard compost pile), but since I am just a student living in a little apartment, I am just throwing them in the regular garbage. When I find out more about this, I will update my review.

Packaging disappointment, December 7, 2009
This review is from: Jaya Biodegradable Knife/Fork/Spoon Combo Pack, 250-Count Case (Health and Beauty)
I ordered these biodegradable utensils for a party we will be hosting, and wanted to be toss them into our city-sponsored commercial compost bin. While the utensils are ok -- they're not the largest or sturdiest biodegradable/compostable utensils I've seen -- imagine my utter dismay when they arrived, and each of the 250 utensil sets (1 each fork/spoon/knife), was individually wrapped in plastic! I was stunned. I had ordered these in an effort to reduce waste, but instead ended up created more because I had to unwrap each set to get at the forks I needed for birthday cake. I re-read the product description to ensure I hadn't missed something, but there is no indication that I could find that these come individually wrapped. Moreover, while it's possible that the plastic wrapping is itself biodegradable or compostable, I couldn't find any information so indicating, so had no alternative but to assume it is plastic and throw the wrappings in the trash. Had that information been disclosed and made known when I purchased these, I would have steered clear.

Great idea but too small...., October 29, 2008
This review is from: Jaya Biodegradable Knife/Fork/Spoon Combo Pack, 250-Count Case (Health and Beauty)
Unfortunately, the product description doesn't mention the size. I've been looking for biodegradable products for a party we are hosting. I was very excited when I found these and read the positive reviews. However, when they arrived today, I saw that the knife, fork, and spoon are barely 6 inches. Disappointing, I won't be able to use these child size utensils for a dinner. They seem sturdy and would be fine for casual occasions. Anyway, I'm still looking for full-size environmentally friendly cutlery, despite my need to use disposables.
