Book Description

0028649192 978-0028649191 October 1997
Sex, Genetics and Human Reproduction extracts articles essential to the discussion of the legal, social, moral and medical issues surrounding sex and reproduction from the 5-volume Encyclopedia of Bioethics, providing a concise version of this Dartmouth Medal-winner for the general reader. The Compendium is a handy desk reference, and an affordable and space-saving alternative for libraries not in need of the deep coverage afforded by the parent set. The selection of articles offers a solid overview of the related subject areas, and the volume includes full index and bibliographies. One volume

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Originally published in the renowned Encyclopedia of Bioethics (LJ 7/95), the articles in this compendium focus on general bioethical topics and on topics relating to reproduction and genetics. Unfortunately, the criteria for selecting articles for the condensed version are not always obvious. Why exclude some seemingly relevant articles such as "Genetic Engineering," and "Genome Mapping" while including "Dentistry" and "Literature"? And why are some articles reproduced in their entirety while others contain only selected sections from the original? Aside from these minor concerns, this compendium has retained the same quality as the original and is an admirable collection. Articles are lengthy, balanced, and very readable. Each article, although not updated from the 1995 version, is signed and includes bibliographical references. While the complete edition of the Encyclopedia of Bioethics remains the best choice for its depth of coverage on all aspects of bioethics, public and academic libraries unable to afford the larger set will find this compendium to be a valuable addition to their collections.?Tina Neville, Univ. of South Florida at St. Petersburg Lib.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Collection, May 11, 2001
This review is from: Bioethics: Sex, Genetics, & Human Reproduction (Macmillan Compendium) (Hardcover)
I got this book at a local bookfair for a considerable discount, however I feel that this book is worth the price they are asking. It has a wide selection of topics, everything from homosexuality to Hinduism, and Abortion. This book would be a great tool for reports and papers one may have to write. I read the entire book like a novel and I enjoyed it all, even though it is not meant to be read all the way through, it is setup much like an encyclopedia. Taking a neutral standpoint yet presenting all the evidence, both ethical and scientific, I give this book 5 stars.

2.0 out of 5 stars Incomplete treatment of issues, March 5, 2003
This review is from: Bioethics: Sex, Genetics, & Human Reproduction (Macmillan Compendium) (Hardcover)
I have reviewed critical articles and graphics from this book to determine whether it should be considered as a possible home school reference. Under the guise of neutrality, the editors and writers present only the humanist driven explanations of the creation of life and the science of genetics. Intelligent design perspectives and scriptural facts are missing from their scientific literalist presentations of cell biology. Most importantly, contemprary religious issues are not considered or clearly portrayed in treatments of ethical issues.I would not recommend this book as appropriate as a stand-alone reference resource for home school study.
