The title of the game (Bio F.R.E.A.K.S.) is an acronym for Biological Flying Robotic Enhanced Armored Killing Synthoids - which of course is referring to the eight fighters in the game, mutants with weapons fused directly to their bodies. Why the drastic elective surgery? Well, the story is set in the future, after the United States has broken into separate regions, each run by a different corporation. Each corporation has a fighter representing the company in battle. If a fighter wins the battle, his corporation takes over the other's territory. This fighting is a tough sport, a tough and bloody sport, even for cyborgs. Characters during a match may lose limbs, causing blood to spurt all over the place, including all over the "camera" - a neat effect the first few times that eventually becomes annoying. Losing limbs will actually change the combos and moves that you are able to do. The control configuration is set up like Tekken, with additional buttons for firing weapons, using jump jets, and sidestepping. You have two bars at the top of the screen. One is the traditional life bar, and the other is a measure of your shield energy. The shield blocks projectile attacks (but is useless against every other attack) and collapses after too many hits.
All of this carnage can be seen from a camera that zooms in when the fighters are close together and zooms out when they are spaced apart, as in Samurai Shodown. Although the view is nice, it can be changed to an over-the-shoulder transparent first-person view like the classic Nintendo arcade boxing game Punch Out. While this is kind of neat, it's really hard to tell how far your opponent is from you, thus making it quite useless. Its presentation as a whole is high quality. With smooth character animations and incredible lighting effects, F.R.E.A.K.S. is, at least visually, one of the most impressive fighting games on the Nintendo 64. The sound effects and music are also quite good - the dark ominous character voices and fast-paced techno music are a perfect match for the harsh futuristic world that the game takes place in.
The environments that you fight in are much more than just backgrounds. The levels are completely 3D, meaning you can go in any direction, even up in the air. Some levels have two or three levels that you can fly up to, but you'll have to beware of saw blades, spikes, toxic ooze, and other environmental hazards.
BF is somewhat similar to Midway's other "other" fighting game, Mace. Mace also featured great graphics, interesting characters, and 3D environments. And while both games are great in almost every way, they both fail in giving a distinctive control style that works well. Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Tekken, all of the greatest fighting games have a system that is distinctively their own. Unfortunately Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. lacks a control set up all its own, putting Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. in the category of "just one of those fighting games."
Most should rent the game once just to try something new and to take a look at the beautiful graphics. While I'm sure it will strike a chord with some, most will probably tire of Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. fairly quickly. --Ryan Mac Donald

Bio Freaks is an arcade style 3D fighting game from Midway, the makers of Mortal Kombat. Unlike MK, Bio Freaks seems very unbalanced and out of place. It just leaves you frustrated at its glaring flaws, so much that you can barely get any enjoyment out of it.
This game will not be remembered, and that's a good thing. Its an unpolished mess. The visuals are dark and slimy, not appealing in the slightest. Why does everything have to be so dark? Having some bright environments wouldn't hurt for a change. The characters range from bland and boring, to cliche', to downright silly. None of these characters stick out. Psyclown would be the neatest one, but he's still nothing to go home about. The combat is clunky and unbalanced. You can press A to shoot your enemy, and then they are invulnerable to your shots for a few seconds. This is when they usually decide to shoot you, but when they do it it takes out over half of your energy! The combo system is simple, and does what it should. You will most likely find yourself shooting, and then rushing in to wail away at the punch button to take down your opponent. There isn't much strategy involved. You can press B to fly up in the air for some aerial combat, but once one of you get hit, you are both coming down hard. This is a feature that adds nothing. The difficulty gets too hard way too fast, even on the easiest difficulty. Your enemies will start to take out over half of your energy with just one attack. It gets very annoying. You will find yourself bored enough that you won't even want to press Continue. You'd rather turn it off and take it out. There are far better 3D fighting games out there on the N64. This one falls at the bottom of the barrel. Go check out Mace: The Dark Age or even Dual Heroes. Anything is better than this. Now, one redeeming factor is that it is very violent and bloody, so that's always a good thing. You'll see some nice gore. But even the violence factor doesn't mean this game is worth playing. Its cheap as mess, around $6 nowadays. So you may as well get it. I mean, no matter how bad a game is, $6 isn't much. At least the front of the cart looks cool.

A 30ft war machine is the boss. And now about the game...,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Biofreaks (Game Cartridge)
Hi everybody! Its me, that kid from Nowhere who has been forbid to use his computer for the past 5 days. Anyway, on with the review! This game has it all: bloody mayhem, guns, lasers, wrecking balls, buzzsaws, missle launchers, sewer dwelling mutants armed with acid sprayers, and a disgruntled elephant bather named Phsyclown. The characters are great: Bullzeye {a "Universal Soldier" reject], Zipperhead {a caveman on steriods}, Sabotage {a MEAN yet pretty bounty hunter}, Delta {a fairy princess with daggers}, Minatek {a mechanical bull who shoots misslles}, Ssapo {a frog on steriods who shoots acid}, Purge {the flaming helicopter boy}, Phsyclown {need I say more?} Clonus {yet again need I say more?}. And.......Mutilator. This guy is HARD to beat. HE is the 30ft war machine. This guy is equiped with laser eyes, chest mounted machine guns, a right arm thats a wrecking ball, a left arm thats a buzzsaw, homing missles in it's back, missle launchers on the legs, super strength, and an ocean filled with hungry fish. The chest guns are a one hit K-O {they blow your head clear off your shoulders}. My only beef with this game is that you can't play as Clonus or Mutilator. In fact, 1 player mode is almost useless. Still, I like this game. Get it!
