I love any thing concerning Amelia Earhart. I love the fact that she was way ahead of her time, and that she was , most definitely, her own person! I was slightly disappointed with this DVD. I knew that it was only 50 minutes long; however, I was hoping they would have a bit more of up-to-date information on this DVD. Otherwise, it is interesting to watch.

I ordered two biographies of Amelia Earhart - although in different covers the discs were exact duplicates. They were much too brief. Amelia Earhart was born in Kansas but she spent some time in Iowa and I believe she had relatives in Iowa in the Des Moines area. There was nothing about this part of her life in the biographies. For example, she saw her first airplane at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines.

AMELIA EARHART - QUEEN OF THE AIR is a BIOGRAPHY series episode first broadcast in 1996. It was re-released on DVD in 2009 to coincide with the home video version of the feature film, AMELIA (USA/Canada-2009), starring Hilary Swank and Richard Gere.

.
Aside from the spoofish Spanky and our Gang LIVE album track, "Amelia Earhart's Last Flight," and the obvious facts (the tomboyish aviatrix's plane vanished in the South Pacific), my knowledge of this early feminist was scant. A fast-moving and most interesting 48 minute A&E BIOGRAPHY episode bearing her name has filled in a lot of gray for me.

Things I didn't know:

She was the daughter of Samuel 'Edwin' Stanton Earhart and Amelia 'Amy' Otis Earhart. Her father was an attorney, unemployable because of alcoholism.

In Jan. '35, Amelia was the first person to fly solo from Hawaii to California, a trip that took 18 hours.

Because of a physical resemblance to Charles Lindbergh, the press dubbed her "Lady Lindy," a sobriquet Earhart disdained.

Her promotion of a fledgling airline gave it enough momentum to succeed. This company eventually became TWA.

Miss Earhart wasn't a very good pilot, and in fact had many accidents.

She could barely operate a radio and didn't know Morse Code.

She was married to an older man who had promoted her for many years.

Earhart spent countless hours raising money for upcoming flights, as she and husband George Putnam were not wealthy people.

I am a pilot and love to fly. The history of this great lady on film reflects the courage and skill it took to be a pioneer in aviation.

Amelia Earhart became the celebrated queen of aviation. However, she had significant deficits in her piloting skills. Amelia did not see the value in radio communication and was not trained in navigation. This undoubtedly contributed to her ill fated crash in the Pacific.
