Product Description

When he called himself "a skinny kid with a funny name" at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, his star was already rising. By the time he triumphed in the 2004 Illinois Senate race, he was the golden child of a Democratic party in desperate need of a charismatic leader. And in November of 2008, he was the first African-American to be elected President of the United States.

BIO narrates the definitive story of BARACK OBAMA, from his childhood in Honolulu to his history-making presidential win. Follow Obama through his teenage struggles for self-identity, his student days at Columbia University and Harvard Law School, and finally, through his political career in Chicago, where he rose to fame through a focus on ethics and political reform. Go behind the scenes of Obama's extraordinarily successful presidential campaign, his triumphant election, and his historic first term in the White House.

Featuring insightful interviews with friends and family members, as well as previously unreleased footage of Obama's campaign and victory, BARACK OBAMA chronicles the uniquely American story of one man rising up to fight for what he believes in - and, the dawning of a new chapter in American history.

4 Stars: For actual presentation.
1 Stars: For repeated repackaging in an opportunistic attempt to get someone to keep buying essentially the same product.

Reason For Lowered Rating:

Anyone that follows Biography knows that their productions can be engaging glimpses at the lives of famous people. At a forty five minute run time (an hour less commercials), though, they present a Cliff's Notes version of someone's life story. The original portrait of Barack Obama was commissioned by the network and released on DVD in 2007. The same documentary has then added some additional footage (but remained largely intact) and been released on two more occasions. Yes, this is the fourth release of the same Biography special with some slight changes near the end to reflect the current state of affairs. If you've bought one or more of these releases, don't get suckered into revisiting the well yet again.

Previous releases:
2007: Biography: Barack Obama
2008: Biography: Barack Obama Election Update Edition
2009: Biography: Barack Obama Inaugural Edition

I suppose one might call this 2012 version the Presidential Edition. After the exact same show, the special throws in a few details about Obama's presidency. It's hardly worth the effort as the additions are so quick and lack much depth. Do you really think that a Presidency can be discussed in a few minutes? It's just a poor attempt to double dip (or in this case quadruple dip) for the same DVD.

If you've never seen the Biography special, however, it is relatively successful. Obama's childhood, insecurities, and relationship to his family are fascinating and well presented.
