In the 1950s, Connie Francis was the biggest selling female vocalist of all time, singing of love and heartbreak, yet was prevented from having a personal life of her own by an overbearing, overprotective father. BIOGRAPHY: CONNIE FRANCIS recounts how the singing star's father disapproved of anyone she dated and chased off the love of her life, Bobby Darin. In the 1960s, she played the nightclub circuit in Vegas, at the Copa and all over Europe. While on tour in 1974, Connie was raped in a Howard Johnson’s hotel room. The trauma of the rape and her addiction to diet pills triggered an extended battle with mental illness. She made death threats to old friends, created public disturbances and went on hundred-thousand-dollar shopping sprees. Only her adopted son Joey gave her reason to live. In 1983, her father had her committed against her will to a mental institution. She bounced between highs and lows until, in 1989, doctors found the medication and dosage to control her manic depression. She returned to performing for those who remembered the golden era of American pop music. When her father was gravely ill in 1996, he insisted Connie not cancel a performance scheduled in Florida.
