Editorial Reviews

She is a Cinderella, of sorts: once a librarian, now First Lady. Interviews with Laura Bush, the President, and Bush family members and friends highlight this portrait. We go behind the public image to meet the real Laura Bush--the young woman involved in a fatal car accident, the new bride struggling to get pregnant, the reserved woman who agreed to support her husband in his public career, and now the polished national leader.

According to this work, Laura Bush ran a stop sign as a teen and killed a classmate. She was not drunk and she was obeying the speed limit. I'm sure the event was traumatizing for all involved and I wouldn't want anyone to be her in shoes or those of the victim. However, I thought when you kill someone on the road, you do time. I'm sure it was an accident, but I'm a little surprised that she didn't seem to get punished for it.

The Biography episode on Rumsfeld was gushy and it clearly is the reason why Rumsfeld and his family were willing to be interviewed. This work includes Mrs. Bush's husband, parents-in-law, and daughters. It was equally gushy. It may be hard for loyal Democrats and residents of Blue states to watch. One example of the gushiness is when the narrator said that the country ran to Mrs. Bush for comfort after 9-11. I don't remember that! I remember folk watching Mariah Carey's "Glitter" in order to escape their sorrows. In a typical Republican fashion, you see Laura Bush and other Bushes surrounded by voiceless, minority children, but this work doesn't include one single adult of color who says they admire her or her husband's policies.

This work pats itself on the back because the Bush twins sit for an interview. They always present the twins as equals. Still, in the same way that Prince William is more striking than Prince Harry, Barbara Bush seems for more impressive than Jenna. She's beautiful, cosmopolitan, and poised; Jenna seems to have more of her father's "down home" style.

In honesty, this work humanizes Mrs. Bush. Persons that had trouble conceiving, were only children, or have an interest in libraries may really enjoy this.
