This review is from: A Biography of Elihu Benjamin Washburne Congressman, Secretary of State, Envoy Extraordinary (Paperback)
This biography of Washburne volume 1 is a great story of a little known Secretary of State who served for 12 days. I am now beginning reading volume three so I am not up to the part where he is Secretary of State. But volume one tells about the life of Elihu Wasburne's family and his wife's family. All the information is true but the story reads like a novel that places you in 19th century Maine and Illinois. Adele Washburne's story is like the Little House on the Prarie. Washburne knew Lincoln and Grant before they were famous. Wasburne was involved in U.S. politics from Tippecanoe in 1840 to the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871 as Ambassador to France.
Volume 1 tells about the Black Hawk War and other Indian battles. I would highly recommend Washburne's four volumes so far and he e-mailed me that he has two more volumes to go. John Navarra Daytona Beach, Florida |
