Book Description

October 1995 3527270345 978-3527270347 1
Threshold limit values indicate the point at which health is impaired by chemicals. They are indispensable in occupational medicine for evaluating the risk of working materials. Biological Tolerance Values (BAT Values) give the threshold limits for hazardous occupational toxicants in body fluids. They are predominantly used in Europe.

This volume provides the scientific reasons why 12 important BAT Values were established at a particular level. The documentations include pharmacokinetics, critical toxicity, exposure and effect, selection of the indicators, methodology, background exposure, interpretation of the data. Further 10 evaluations for carcinogenic substances are given (e.g. arsenic trioxide, ethylene oxide, hydrazine, nickel and vinyl chlorides). For the first time, monitoring by measuring haemoglobin adducts is described.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

The first volume in this series on occupational toxicants for industrial medicine contains the reasons which have lead to the establishment of 51 BAT values (biological tolerance values for working materials). The second volume provides the scientific reasons why 12 important BAT Values were established at a particular level. Further documentation for 10 carcinogens is also given.

From the Back Cover

All volumes of the MAK-Collection provide comprehensive and authoritative information for occupational health and safety professionals and researchers. They cover both the toxicological substantiation of threshold values for chemicals at the workplace (MAK and BAT values) and the suitable monitoring methods. Thus, they are an indispensable tool for maintaining occupational health and safety. Here, the documentations for the established BAT values (Biological Tolerance Values) and EKA (Exposure Equivalents for Carcinogenic Substances) as well as for further biological exposure values are provided. These include an authoritative review of the available toxicological studies and data. For every substance, metabolism and pharmacokinetics, critical toxicity, exposure and effects, suitable indicators of internal exposure, the evaluation of the BAT value and the correct interpretation of data are described. Basic physico-chemical data are provided as well. The documentations are thus not only essential for the application of BAT and EKA values but provide a concise overview of biological monitoring for each substance. The documentations are authoritative, because they were compiled by the Commission for the Investigation of Health Hazards of Chemical Compounds in the Work Area. The Commission is internationally acknowledged for its neutrality and is working strictly according to transparent, scientific criteria. BAT Values set the standards for legal regulations in many countries of the world. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
