Review

"A superb book! It provides professionals, parents and the public with new, important, authoritative and easy-to-understand information about autism and related disorders. It's a 'must read.'" -- William G. Crook, M.D. Author, The Yeast Connection

"I want to thank-you for your book. Without meaning to sound immodest, I wish to put into place how excellent it is. Almost everything I read is often that with which I am familiar, because I have been in private practice for 30 years. But, since there is so much marvelously new and explanatory material on the organic acids and on the undesirable metabolites of yeast activity in your book, I am reading your book line for line, page for page, underlining, and highlighting. It is so exciting when I have something that is new, valuable, and useful. Thank you for your excellent book. I am really benefiting from it." -- Barbara Kravets CCN, LNC

"There are, however, very few books-like this one-which address the practical, here-and-now biomedical treatments that can bring about dramatic improvement in many autistic individuals...The reader will quickly discover that this book is 'user-friendly'. Its purpose is to clarify, to explain, to guide, and to encourage so that at long last the parents themselves can begin to do what they have always wanted to do-have a real hand in the healing of their autistic child...Thank you, Dr. Shaw!" -- Dr. Bernard Rimland, Autism Research Institute

From the Author

The purpose of writing this book is to integrate information from the fields of biochemistry, immunology, genetics, nutrition, and microbiology about autism, ADD, and PDD into a form that could be assimilated by both parents, professionals such as nutritionists and dietitians, and physicians who deal with children with these disorders. Long conversations with hundreds of parents of children with autism and PDD, including many who are themselves physicians, have provided me with many clues to these disorders. The wealth of information on the abnormalities of the immune system in autism leads me to the conclusion that the genetic factors in autism appear to be primarily those affecting the immune system. In my view, the anatomical abnormalities in the brain that have been documented may be secondary to abnormal metabolic function caused by abnormal microbial metabolites and/or toxic peptides from wheat and milk, which in turn are due to an impaired immune system. The information in this book may be useful not only for people with autism but also for children with any disorder in which some of the symptoms of autism are sometimes or frequently present including pervasive developmental disorder (PDD), Rett's syndrome, Williams disease, neurofibromatosis, tuberous sclerosis, Fragile X, Down's syndrome, Tourette's syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, and attention deficit disorder(ADD). Many of the same abnormalities in autism are also present in these disorders and the therapies suggested in this book for autism may also help children and adults with these other disorders as well. My objectives are to describe the abnormalities in autism and related disorders and to describe some of the therapies that are frequently beneficial for children and adults who have some or all of the symptoms of autism. Although a few children have completely recovered from autism using the therapies outlined in this book (and the parents of two of them include their accounts in this book), I am not suggesting that all children will benefit but hope that many will benefit to some degree. I think that the accounts of the two mothers whose children recovered are very important because of the similarities of the therapies they used. Both mothers obtained information and instituted therapy independently. Both children were diagnosed early about the age of two years. Both mothers independently arrived at the use of antifungal therapy, an antiyeast diet low in sugar and free of yeast, treatment of food allergies, and a gluten and casein-free diet as key cornerstones of therapy but also used intensive behavioral interventions as well. You will note that there are significant differences in the nutritional and antifungal approaches presented by different authors in this book. I realize that this may be confusing but this information honestly reflects the fact that there are still many unknowns. You may wish to experiment with several of the different nutritional and antifungal approaches to determine which ones are most beneficial for your patient or your child. Some of this material may be difficult but I have made every attempt to simplify it without distorting the meaning. Knowledge is power. Much of this information may not be familiar to parents or to medical practitioners. The parent who reads this book should assume that their family doctor or even their neurologist or other specialist may not know nearly as much as they do about autism after reading this book. Most of the information has been available in the form of research papers that have been available only to medical research specialists but was essentially unknown by persons outside the narrow specialty. There has been a tremendous increase in the application of knowledge about autism and PDD that was stimulated by a group of physicians and scientists who met in Dallas in January 1995 as a part of Dr. Bernard Rimland's Defeat Autism Now! (DAN!) Conference. My goal for this book is to allow your child to be healthier and function better so that both you and your child will have a better life. I am sure to be criticized for recommending action based on "incomplete" or "anecdotal" data. While acknowledging the great benefits of antibiotics in treating disease, I think the overuse of antibiotics may have been the single most damaging medical treatment of the last half of this century for some of our children. However, I think the dangers to our children are too great to wait until all data are perfect, meaning that we should wait forever. The Red Cross refused to act on behalf of the Jews in German concentration camps in World War II despite numerous reports of genocide because the evidence was "anecdotal" rather than "definitive." It has taken nearly 50 years from the time of the first research linking lung cancer and smoking to get restrictions on cigarette use for minors. It took 25 years from the initial discovery that folic acid supplementation prevented a birth defect called spina bifida until extra folic acid supplements were recommended for pregnant women. The stakes for the safety of our children are too high to wait forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars A bible for any adult or parent of a child with autism/PDD, January 1, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Biological Treatments for Autism & PDD : What's Going On? What Can You Do About It? (Paperback)
This is the first book I've found that ties all credible theories linking autism and related brain / development disorders to immune deficiency problems. I was able to retrace my child's health history and family-related health history to finally understand the ROOT CAUSE of her autism. Without understanding root causes, we can only treat symptoms, not the problem. I've been able to understand how her day-to-day functioning is almost solely dependent on her immune status. I was also able to understand from Shaw and Crook that multiple courses of antibiotics (15 by her first birthday), caused severe dysbiosis and yeast overgrowth. Yeast metabolites are probably the primary neurotoxin which affected her brain development from 12 months-4 years. We have implemented supplements recommended throughout the book for brain development and yeast control and my daughter is now mainstreamed in a regular kindergarten. One month before her 5th birthday, she expressed an interest in learning to read. Two months later, she is now reading her 5th book!! My husband and I never thought this would be possible. She also gets 28 hours per week of ABA (applied behavior analysis) at home as well as 2 hours/week of music therapy at school. None of the home intervention or special services would have been as effective if we had not taken action to improve her biological functioning first. It has been clearly evident to her team (special ed & school teachers, paraprofessionals, speech & music therapists, that after we implemented the dietary changes and added supplements recommended in the book, my daughter's improvement in speech, memory, cognitive skills, and social skills skyrocketed. An EXCELLENT complement to this book is THE BRAIN WELLNESS PLAN by Dr. Jay Lombard, a Board Certified Neurologist. Dr. Lombard gives a better "plan" for supplements than Shaw's book as well as providing the most heavily-researched book I've found on this subject (60 pages of references are noted).

5.0 out of 5 stars Partners In Autisms - Knowledge & Understanding Pick, August 31, 2000

This review is from: Biological Treatments for Autism & PDD : What's Going On? What Can You Do About It? (Paperback)
Do you find yourself wondering if someone came in the middle of the night, stole your beautiful child or family member, and left a distant stranger seemingly lost in a nightmarish prison of sensory defensiveness and walled-in isolation in their place? Are you tired of the never-ending battle to stay ahead of screams, mind blindness, and over or under stimulation using medications designed to mask and sedate rather than treat and heal? Well if you want to really begin to understand what is going on, if you want to take charge of your loved one's life and put them on a path to better health and a more promising future, then read this book.

I'm not the publisher, I'm a parent advocate who has spent the better part of the last 8 years living and dealing with Autism and lobbying for awareness and a cure. I'm not the author, but I have met and heard him and an innumerable number of his counterparts speak, and I want to tell you this book is not just enlightening, it's liberating. If you are in anyway involved with someone on the Autistic Spectrum, this book is an absolute "must read".

Dr. Shaw takes the complicated and often convoluted theory, and discoveries of some of the most brilliant researchers, physicians, scientists, and other experts in their fields, and explains, dissects, and relates their research and findings in a way that just about anyone can understand regardless of education or background. His book will help you discover how researchers are finally beginning to unravel the mystery and biological origins of a disorder that as recently as the 1970's was considered a psychological malady often attributed to cold and unfeeling "refrigerator mothers"

Using easy to follow examples and his unique way of relating complex concepts, Dr. Shaw thoughtfully examines the ground breaking medical research, case studies, and clinical trials behind some of the newest treatments and many more looming on the horizon. As you progress through chapters on various topics such as yeast proliferation, allergies, and fungus, you will begin understand the correlation between the gut and the brain, how the various systems of the body interact, and how and why a breakdown in one system directly and indirectly affects the others. Before you know it the dynamics and theory behind such controversial interventions as Secretin and Anti-fungal therapy begin to make sense, and the veil of mystery surrounding Autism seems to lift ten fold.

Although several cases of recovery are presented in the book it should be noted that there is still a long way to go. A lot more research needs to be done, and many more questions need to be answered. After reading this book however, I think you will find many exciting treatment options and a lot of viable alternatives to more conventional medications that merely eclipse symptoms and further submerge personality. More importantly, feelings of helplessness and hopelessness will diminish as your understanding increases and the very real prospects for recovery and eventual cure of this wide-ranging disorder are presented.

This review is from: Biological Treatments for Autism & PDD : What's Going On? What Can You Do About It? (Paperback)
This is one of the most comprehensive, up-to-date research available to parents/guardians of autistic individuals. This book gives critical information on treatments that ARE effective in helping individuals diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorder. Also, parents of children diagnosed with ADD ADHD and learning disabilities will benefit. THERE ARE TREATMENTS FOR AUTISM. Wonderful book which includes parent testimonials.
