5.0 out of 5 stars Best $22 I ever spent!
This is a real resource. I KNOW I should have been teaching like this over the past 17 years....never too late to learn new strategies. The exercises in this book really makes it easy to get your students thinking in different ways, namely by using their brains and not expecting you to simply provide them with answers. I highly recommend it!

3.0 out of 5 stars It's ok
The product itself came quickly and in new condition. I just thought the book in general was ok. There were some activities that were worth doing with my class, but many of them were too imagination based and not so sciene based. I was hoping there would be more in class lab activities or demonstrations in it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing book!, August 15, 2007
This review is from: Biology Inquiries: Standards-Based Labs, Assessments, and Discussion Lessons (Jossey-Bass Teacher) (Paperback)
I borrowed this book from my university library last year and am about to buy a copy for myself. This book is amazing, the lessons are fun and relevant. These activities get students interested in Biology and give teachers an alternative to teaching centered around lecture and worksheets. Shields has done his homework on including topic connections, student worksheets and clear instructions on how to facilitate the activities. I would recommend this book to any science teacher who's interested in including inquiry based learning into their curriculum.

4.0 out of 5 stars great lesson ideas, July 30, 2006
This review is from: Biology Inquiries: Standards-Based Labs, Assessments, and Discussion Lessons (Jossey-Bass Teacher) (Paperback)
If you are searching for concrete examples of inquiry lessons, this book is one you will like. It is divided into content areas and each area has several lessons that can be done in sequence or individually as stand alone lessons. I just purchased it in June and can't wait to get back to my classroom to try these lessons!

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding collection of inquiry lessons., March 28, 2009

This is an outstanding collection of inquiry lessons for biology.

I have purchased many books containing science lessons over the years. However, this book is at the top of the list. Most of the lessons are appropriate for ninth grade biology; however, there are a few that are more appropriate for Honors or AP biology. Regardless, all of the lessons are very high quality. If you are searching for inquiry lessons to do with your students; then this is a book that I can highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Constructivist Tool for Biology Teachers, June 30, 2010

This review is from: Biology Inquiries: Standards-Based Labs, Assessments, and Discussion Lessons (Jossey-Bass Teacher) (Paperback)
This book has been an excellent resource to move my class from lecture based to more hand-on inquiry activities. Each activity helps students learn content and about the nature of science. I love that this book includes student worksheets and teacher answers and hints. The activities requires that students think about what they are learning and not just skimming back to find the right answer. I felt like I had a mentor telling me the tricks to their successful inquiry-based class.

I have been teaching for 6 years now and this is by far the best biology lab resource I have ever used. Some of the labs require some hard to find materials so plan ahead when using it.

The book has some great activities, unfortunately some of them were above the level I teach my 9th grade students. I think a teacher with a Pre-AP or an AP class would use this book a bit more than a regular 9th grade biology teacher. The couple activities I have used are great and do engage the students in higher order thinking.

The book breaks down EVERYTHING you need to know! Shields gives overview information on the topic, time constraints, implementation strategies, and more. He provides "teacher" material and "student" material. Cannot give this enough praise! I hope Shields writes 100 more books like this!! THANK YOU MARTIN SHIELDS!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Biology Inquiries, November 17, 2008
This review is from: Biology Inquiries: Standards-Based Labs, Assessments, and Discussion Lessons (Jossey-Bass Teacher) (Paperback)
I teach at a private school all subjects to
the high school. I needed to have a guide
for biology labs that was doable and the supplies
were inexpensive. This wonderful book supplies just
that. You need to read it, and follow the directions
to the Biology Labs to the letter--they really work.
A must have for any biology teacher!! Well worth the money.
Reproducables are included!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic for all levels, December 6, 2011
This review is from: Biology Inquiries: Standards-Based Labs, Assessments, and Discussion Lessons (Jossey-Bass Teacher) (Paperback)
This book is awesome. It has a variety of activities that challenge students to think outside the box. I think honours students would benefit the most from this type of learning but there is room for all abilities. Some of the activities require some prep. This year I am putting students into lab groups and they are responsible for prepping the lab for the entire class ahead of time, trouble shooting it and then assisting with execution of it on lab day.
