5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for College Biology
I utilized this book for my college biology classes. It was very complete and had great details on photosynthesis, Krebs cycle, glycolysis. I even liked the chapters on animal structure and function, quite interesting. However, the chapter on genetics was the hardest to read. I had to re-read pages over again to understand what Raven was trying to teach. If you want...

3.0 out of 5 stars graphs are incredible, text is wordy
The graphs summarize lots of important information in a clear and easy to understand format.

Some part of the text is wordy, not very concise. It helps to develop the breadth and depth of the text but meanwhile it's quite distracting and sometimes confusing for grasping the key concepts.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best biology book ever, August 4, 2005
This review is from: Biology (Hardcover)
I absolutely love this book. The explanations are thorough and understandable and the pictures and diagrams cannot be beat. Truly a great read. The book goes into enough detail, but not too much that you get confused. Thank you Purdue bio department for choosing this book!! Highly recommended!

I bought this book freshman year of college and have used it well into my senior year. It's a great book to keep for reference and contains information covered in all the biology classes I have taken. Pictures of mechanisms are easy to understand and very helpful.

This is an older version of a text that hasn't changed, very affordable and good to have around the house to help my 10th grader with her current biology course.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst Biology Book Ever!, March 22, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Biology (Hardcover)
I purchased this book from Amazon to assist me with studying for the Praxis Biology content exam. Because of the price, and because it appeared to cover all of the topics that I needed to study, it appeared to be a good bargain. Boy, was I wrong.

I don't have any complaints with Amazon. The book arrived from the co. promptly and in good condition, like all of my previous Amazon purchases. What I was extremely disappointed in however, was the book itself. As I mentioned before, it was the worst biology book that I have ever tried to read. I say tried because, as hard as I did try, I couldn't make it past the first few chapters. And I had only gotten this far after several weeks of reading and re-reading the material. I like to think of myself as an intelligent individual, but I could comprehend very little of this book. Much of the language used in the book was unfamiliar so it made learning the concepts almost impossible. I found myself having to use additinal references(google, dictionary, ect) to understand the text. Finally, I had to concede that it just wasn't worth all of the energy that I was putting out to try and understand the text, and I purchased something else to help me study for my exam. I then chalked the purchase of this book up to a bad investment.

If you're looking for a comprehensive biolgy book that doesn't require you to be a nuclear scientist to understand, this is definately NOT the book for you. Just a warning!

5.0 out of 5 stars Updated Enough Even Though It's An Old Edition, October 5, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Biology (Hardcover)
I'm reading this book for my own education, not for a class.

It is quite comprehensive and easy to understand. It even includes a chapter about chemistry to refresh your memory if you're a little bit weak on chemistry. There's 2 newer editions of this book, but this edition appears to be adequate. It's not that old, and I'm assuming that introductory biology hasn't changed that much.

If you need this book for a class, you might want to by a newer edition. If you need the book for your own use, you might as well buy the old version cheap.
