Books such as this are always in demand for school projects and science fair entries, and this well-formatted, helpful book in the Projects for Young Scientists series will prove useful to science enthusiasts as well. Chapters are divided by subject and offer a handful of ideas for experiments involving chemicals, cell structure and function, microorganisms, body systems, growth and development, and genetics and evolution. Between text sections are boxed insets providing safety tips, as well as lists of required materials. Useful illustrations are included when appropriate, and occasional photographs depict equipment and microscopic images. Although the vocabulary and sentence structure may be overly simple for some high-school students, the experiments range from easy to sophisticated, and the "doing more" suggestions are great for industrious young scientists. A glossary and a concise resources section that lists books, Web sites, and science supply companies are appended.
