Book Description

0471629871 978-0471629870 April 1990 Volume 1
This book is the first in the series and is a review of the ways in which ultraviolet and visible light affect the nucleic acids. It includes changes caused by excitation of the nucleic acids themselves as well as reactions caused by photoexcitation of other reagents in the presence of nucleic acids. Ultraviolet light is a known carcinogen, has been recently used for phototherapy of cancer, and has been used for "photoaffinity labelling" of biological molecules. This volume will help the reader to understand these and other photoinduced phenomena as they relate to the nucleic acids.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Photochemical research at the interface of chemistry and biology has increasingly moved toward a merger of biochemical and organic chemical methodologies, resulting in exciting new developments. This series will provide a current survey of the field of bioorganic photochemistry, reviewing the recent literature, research and developments in such areas as photosynthesis, vision, photoaffinity labeling, and the photochemistry of biologically important molecules such as proteins and the nucleic acids. The cases reviewed will employ the latest in synthetic, mechanistic and spectroscopic techniques and are geared toward understanding at the molecular level.
